UNB, London :
Mentioning that Bangladesh is now a role model of development, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday urged the Bangladeshi expatriates, living in the UK, not to do anything that may tarnish the country’s image.
“Bangladesh’s progress in all sectors is just like a magic to many foreign leaders, but it’s not a magic to us, it’s our sincerity to serve people. So, you shouldn’t do anything that goes against nation’s image,” she said.
The Prime Minister, now in London on her way to Sweden on a three day official visit, was addressing leaders of the Bangladesh community at Stroke Park.
She said there was a time when Bangladesh was known as a land of beggars, natural disasters and in many other bad names. “We have overcome that situation, and established us as the role model of development at the global stage.
Sheikh Hasina said, it is the responsibility of every Awami League worker, both at home and abroad, to work with dedication for the nation’s development, brightening Bangladesh’s image and materialising Bangabandhu’s dreams to build the country as Sonar Bangla.
About terrorism and militancy, she said her government has taken a ‘zero-tolerance’
stance against the vices to make Bangladesh as the most peaceful country in South Asia.
Hasina said the country’s overall poverty rate now declined to 22 percent from 50 percent in 2006 and Bangladesh’s economic growth was 7.2 percent last year, an extraordinary success.
By 2021, the Prime Minister said, Bangladesh will become a middle-income country and a developed one by 2041.
The Prime Minister expressed her deep sorrow at the loss of lives in a series of land slides triggered by heavy rains in Bangladesh and in a devastating fire in London. “We’ve to move ahead amid the grief and distresses,” she said.
Turning to cricket, the sports-loving Prime Minister thanked the players and all other members of Bangladesh national cricket team for being qualified for the semifinal of the Champions Cup Cricket Trophy, now being held in the UK.
Hasina also thanked the Bangladesh community in UK for their overwhelming support to secure the victory of three Bangladesh origin Britain daughters in the recently-held British parliamentary snap polls.
Earlier, newly elected Labour Party members in House of Commons Tulip Rizwana Siddiq and Rushanara Ali made a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her hotel. The Prime Minister discussed various issues relating to mutual interests with them.
