The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday sent a letter to the Election Commission (EC) asking it not to allocate “Daripalla” (Pair of Scales) as election symbol to any political party, as it is the apex court’s monogram. In the letter, the SC also asked the Election Commission to cancel the allocation of “Daripalla” if it had already been allocated to any political party.
The letter signed by Abu Diljar Hussain, Registrar of the High Court (HC) Division of the Supreme Court, has been sent a day after the decision was taken by the SC.
The Supreme Court after a full court meeting on December 12 decided to request the Election Commission not to allocate the Pair of Scales to any political party as the election symbol. It is because the Supreme Court is using it as a ‘symbol of justice’ since its establishment.
It is unacceptable and unwanted if “Daripalla” is used as a symbol of any individual or any organisation or any political party, the letter read. Confusion might be created among the minds of people if “Daripalla” is used as the symbol of any institution or any political party, it added.
An officer of the High Court division conveyed the letter to the Election Commission office at 4 PM yesterday, sources said.
The Pair of Scales was earlier allocated to Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. The party also obtained the EC registration with the ‘Pair of Scales’ as its election symbol on Nov 4, 2008.
Later, the party lost the right to contest Parliamentary elections after the High Court declared its registration with the EC as illegal. But the EC website is still showing Jamaat on the list of registered political parties, with the ‘Pair of Scales’ as its symbol.
