‘Domestic poultry rearing for poverty alleviation stressed’

BSS, Rangpur :Speakers at a distribution ceremony here have stressed for expanding small-scale domestic poultry rearing that assists the rural poor in alleviating poverty and achieving economic self-reliance.World Vision Bangladesh (WVB) under its Pirganj Area Development Programme (ADP) arranged the ceremony at Chatra Mohila College in Pirganj upazila on Sunday for distribution of ‘Golden’ variety chickens among 120 extremely poor households.With Pirganj ADP Manager of the NGO Francis P Nath in the chair, Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Masudar Rahman attended the ceremony as the chief guest and distributed 1,200 chickens with 10 among each of the 120 beneficiary families.Earlier, the WVB provided training to the beneficiary males and females of these 120 households of eight villages under Sadar and Chatra unions on setting up of eco-friendly domestic poultry farms using semi-intensive methods to achieve self-reliance.Project Manager of Pirganj ADP of WVB Sagar D Costa, its Project Officer Faruk Hossain, President of Pirganj Press Club Sarwar Jahan, its member Mazharul Alam Milan and Abdus Sattar took part in the discussion.The speakers asked the male and female beneficiary family members for setting up small-scale poultry farms at their homesteads and properly utilising the knowledge and technology they acquired for the previously given training to achieve success.They said the rural areas in Bangladesh have favourable climatic and environmental conditions to flourishing poultry sector through using proper training and latest technologies to boost the prospective sector.The poultry sector has already brought huge economic success for hundreds of the rural people through GO-NGO collaboration towards the direction side by side contributing a lot to the national economy and alleviating extreme poverty.The chief guest suggested the project beneficiaries for properly utilising their acquired knowledge about rearing and feeding of poultry birds, combating diseases, vaccination and precaution during marketing of poultry products.
