The Department of Environment (DoE) Chattogram fined five businesses, including a shipbreaking yard, a total of Tk 10.30 lakh for operating without clearance certificates as well as damaging the environment by releasing untreated waste.
The fine was imposed on the offenders after a hearing at the DoE Khulsi office of the port city today.
Mohammad Moazzom Hossain, director of Chattogram DoE, told The Daily Star that Chagir Brick was fined Tk five lakhs for not renewing DoE clearance certificate while Magic Paradise Park of Cumilla district was fined Tk one lakh for the same reason.
Apart from this, Tahsin Steel, a shipbreaking yard, was fined Tk one lakh for damaging the shore by releasing untreated waste and Maskut Complex of Noakhali was fined Tk three lakhs for not obtaining clearance certificate, he said.
Besides Foizun Industry Limited was fined for violating the condition stipulated on the clearance certificate, he added.
