Department of Environment (DoE) has fined Golden Iron Works Ship Breaking Yard at Sitakunda in Chittagong for violating environmental conditions and damaging the environment.
Chittagong Division Director Mohammad Moazzam Hossain conducted the drive by Environment Department at a hearing on Monday . According to a press release signed by Chittagong Region Director of the Department of Environment Mohammad Moazzem Hossain, the offense was punished for violating the conditions of environmental exemption and damaging the environment in the light of Section 4 of the Bangladesh Environment Protection Act.
He said, the ship breaking yard, located at Shitalpur area of Sonichari in Sitakunda upazila fined Tk 10 lakh. The ship breaking yard violated the term of the environmental exemption and they also caused environmental damage.
During the hearing, it was also mentioned that if the organisation failed to pay the fine, legal action would be taken against them.
