Barishal office of the Department of Environment (DoE) fined 33 brick kilns operating in eleven upazilas of Barishal division Tk 15,55,000 and flied 31 cases and jailed two persons for violating environment act by setting up illegal brick kilns, ignoring Environment Conservation Law recently.
They were fined as some of them were being operated without environmental clearance and some were them using old technology like drum chimney that allows emit smoke on lower phase of the air violating the environment act, said Abdul Halim, Director of DoE .
This is time of staring burning bricks in kilns, so we planned to operate speedy and more drives of mobile courts in different areas of the region and concerned authority also empowered us for that, he added.
Mobile courts in January driving operations at six brick kilns different areas of the division collected Tk. 1, 90000 and operating mobile courts at 27 brick kilns in February collected Tk 13, 65000 as fine from the brick kiln owners, DoE sources said.
As many as 103 out of 245 brick fields in six districts of Barisal division have continued their illegal operation violating Environment Act, DoE sources confirmed.
