Director General of the Department of Environment Dr AKM Rafiq Ahmed died at the age of 55 at the Central Police Hospital in the capital early on Saturday morning.
According to family sources, he was admitted to hospital on March 23. Later, he tested positive for COVID-19.
As his condition worsened, he was kept in life support yesterday.
Rafiq Ahmed left behind his wife, two sons and a number of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
In a condolence message, Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Md Shahab Uddin expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Rafiq Ahmed.
He prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family members. Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar, Secretary Ziaul Hasan and all the officials and employees of the department also condoled his death in separate messages.
Rafiq Ahmed joined the government service in 1991 as an officer of the 10th batch of the BCS (Administration) cadre.
Prior to joining as the Director General of the Department of Environment on 22 May 2019, he served as a Commercial Counselor at the Bangladesh Consulate General Office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
