A Chattogram court on Monday placed Tanzila Haque Chowdhury alias Mitu, wife of Dr Mustafa Murshed Akash who allegedly committed suicide in his residence on Thursday, on three-day remand in a case filed for provoking Akash to commit suicide.
The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Al Imran passed the order after hearing a seven-day remand prayer to interrogate Mitu, said Kazi Shahabuddin Ahmed, Assistant Commissioner (Prosecution) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).
A team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) on Thursday night arrested Mitu from Nandakanan area night in Chattogram city in connection with the provocation of the alleged ‘suicide’.
The 32-year old Akash, a doctor of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), allegedly committed suicide at his residence in Chandgaon Residential Area in the city on Thursday (January 31).
Before his death, the physician posted a ‘suicide note’ on his Facebook profile along with few photos and video of Mitu.
The incident became the talk of the country while the Facebook post went viral on social media.
On Friday, Akash’s mother Jobeda Khanam filed a case with Chandgaon Police Station, Chattogram accusing Mitu, Mitu’s father Anisul Haque Chowdhury and mother Shamim Shelly, sister Sanzila Haque Chowdhury, her alleged boyfriends Mahbubul Haque and an Indian citizen referred only as Patel.
Chandgaon Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and Investigation Officer Abdul Quader who assigned to the case prayed for the remand, said CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (South) Md Mijanur Rahman.
Family members said, before his apparent suicide, Akash had shared photos of his wife on his Facebook profile and wrote about her alleged extramarital affairs before announcing his decision to end own life.
Before his death, Akash wrote on Facebook that Mitu had been continued ‘illicit affair’ with more than one men since their marriage in 2016. But he could not stop her doing so. That is why, he decided to take his own life, family sources said.
Inspector Jobair Syed said the deceased’s mother filed a case against the six persons named and three to four others unnamed.
On Friday morning, CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (North) Mizanur Rahman said in a press briefing at Dampara Police Line that Mitu had confessed to a number of issues during primary interrogation, and sidestepped others.
However, the police official declined to disclose details about what was revealed during interrogation, as the incident is still being investigated. “The couple was married in 2016. It was an unhappy marriage, plagued by conjugal disputes between the two over extramarital affairs. At one point, Mitu went to the US and returned to Bangladesh on January 13,” the ADC said.
“A few hours before Akash’s death, the couple had a heated argument, and Akash’s mother asked Mitu’s father to take her daughter-in-law away around 4am. After Mitu left her in-laws house, Akash posted a status on Facebook detailing Mitu’s extramarital affairs. After some time, he injected himself with insulin, which led to his death,” he added.
The police had already seized the couple’s mobile phones to investigate the matter.
In a Facebook post detailing the relationship between him and his wife, Akash claimed Mitu cheated on him repeatedly, but refused to divorce him when he asked her if she wanted to be with someone else.
Akash accused his wife of instigating him and causing him undue grief and distress.
After the post, he changed his profile picture to a photo with his wife, captioned: “Keep well my beloved, with your lovers.” Several hours after his death, the Facebook post was removed.
Akash was a student of Chittagong Medical College’s 47th batch and completed MBBS in 2010. He was also pursuing post-graduate training while working at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
