Commentary: Doctors must come out to arrange international cooperation

Rights activists have alleged widespread human rights violations are taking place in the country amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The report has been circulated in the media on Friday prepared by 6 eminent professionals including photo journalist Shahidul Alam, Supreme Court lawyers Jyotirmoy Barua, Women rights activist Farida Akhtar and such others. It shows people are not getting the minimum access to treatment and in many cases are dying unattended.
It is unfortunate that at least 122 people from 41 districts died allegedly without treatment. They were denied admission to hospitals or did not receive treatment in hospitals after admission. Their treatment was neglected or obstructed by relatives or neighbours. Earlier a similar BBC report said at least 929 people died with corona symptoms in two months till the middle of May failing to secure access to treatment.
Even health workers and physicians are facing a dire situation without adequate access to health safety. But the government is barring them from talking to the media to conceal the scandalous situation in fighting the corona pandemic without basically improving the situation.
It appears senior health officials are compelled to leave hospitals in the absence of protection
for their own safety. They can be asked to face sure death without it being helpful to the patients. The ministers are holed up for their safety and enjoying special care from their special doctors in socially protected hospitals. They are holding useless Video conferences with no communications with the people either through the press or directly. It is good for them that our people are too tolerant when tolerant. They have no leadership. But criminal negligence of the patients is shameful without the needed supervision. Patients are fleeing in such situation and the fact that doctors and government officials are staying away from the people for their own safety is a national disgrace.
Places are locked down and the police are asked to be tough in enforcing lockdowns but the government is not aware of its responsibility to take care of the locked down people. At least supply of food should be ensured. It is no governance to issue orders and ask the police to ensure compliance by risking their lives. Many good doctors and nurses and police officers lost their lives for lack of medical protection
The government has no capacity or competence to be helpful to the people. It has gathered around them sycophants as they have no competence to govern. They plundered the country and are waiting to leave the country. But they cannot do it for the restrictions in other countries on the entry of outsiders.
We find it is useless to criticise the government which is so incompetent that it is relying on the lies of their own men.
Because dealing with the pandemic has to be the business of expert doctors we see them as our people’s last hope. They should get together to appeal for international help. We have no others to ask for help. Appeals from the government are taken seriously.
It is reported internationally that the number of coronavirus infections in Dhaka can be as high as 7,50,000. Some of our officials are superb liars. Thus the people cannot rely on the government for their competence or for their truthfulness. The people needs help to keep themselves alive. We feel doctors have to play a vital role.
