Health experts at a programme on Saturday urged the physicians to take necessary preparation to cope with mass casualties in case of disasters such as fire and earthquake.
They laid stress on the necessity of contingency plans for physicians to manage the casualties successfully, because health and health services deteriorate during such type of emergency situation.
Doctors at hospitals must be equipped with necessary facilities and training so that they can provide appropriate treatments to maximum people during disaster, which generally bring illness and injuries on a massive scale, the experts said this while addressing an opening function of a two-day training programme on ‘Mass Casualty Management During Earthquake and Fire Incident’ yesterday.
Suhrawardy Hospital, Save the Children, and Community Participation and Development (CPD) jointly organized the programme with support from European Union Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO).
Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM) is conducting the training programme in the conference room of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the city.
Prof. Dr. Uttam Kumar Barua, Director of the hospital attended the opening function as the Chief Guest.
Pointing the population density and unplanned urbanization as risk factors, the health experts said, most of the buildings in the capital are not earthquake-resistant.
The buildings were made without following the building code. There is a risk of massive damage and casualties in case of quake in the city, they opined.

Department of Population Dynamics, NIPSOM, and Dr. Bayzid Amin, Lecturer, Department of Public Health and Hospital Administration, NIPSOM spoke at the programme.
