Abu Sazzad :
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has set an allocation of Tk 14 crore for the current fiscal year (2015-16) with a view to eliminating mosquito from the corporation area.
The ongoing fiscal year’s allocation is 40 per cent higher than that of the last fiscal, which was Tk 10 crore, DNCC Senior Entomologist Mohammad Alam Sharif Khan told The New Nation on Thursday.
Actually, in the last few months mosquito menace has assumed an alarming proportion much to the sufferings of the city dwellers due to non-stop rain. Life has become so uncomfortable due to this seasonal boom of mosquitoes. In many places, especially in the slum areas, people are forced to use nets and coils even during the day time.
Apart from this, a sudden rise in dengue patients is prompting fears of an outbreak of the viral disease in the capital, particularly in city’s slum areas. The budgetary allocation for controlling mosquito programme is not properly used due to misuse of the fund, it is alleged.
Citizens from various areas of the Dhaka North City Corporation have complained that the menace continues to rise due to lack of proper monitoring of the corporation, presence of numerous
open garbage cans, stagnant drains and negligence of the corporation’s field staffs in spraying insecticides.
In this backdrop, the DNCC has taken more proactive and effective initiatives this year from the past experience to eradicate mosquito for ensuring secured and peaceful life for the city dwellers, said the senior entomologist.
He said the DNCC is conducting anti-mosquito spray regularly under a crash programme. The field staffs are using larviciding spray, especially in the drain and near to the garbage areas in the morning. Larviciding is an ecologically safe preventive method used to interrupt the development of larvae or pupa into adult mosquitoes.
They are also using adulticiding spray in the evening. Adulticiding is the application of products into the air to reduce the population of adult mosquitoes, said Sharif Khan.
Considering the necessity of eradicating mosquito promptly from the city, the DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq has already declared to recruit more staffs in 36 wards of the corporation to conduct drive against mosquitoes.
Meanwhile, the DNCC officials are regularly monitoring hospitals to know the data of dengue patients for taking a holistic approach to eradicate mosquito from their respective areas, the official said.
Sharif Khan claimed that most of the residents throw garbage everywhere which remains piled up where mosquitoes breed. Mosquito eradication can not be achieved by the city corporation alone. He suggested that the residents should keep their courtyards and nearby bushes clean in order to prevent mosquito breeding.
“DNCC is planning to provide huge media coverage for growing people’s consciousness against breedin
