The Department of Narcotic Control (DNC) is set to undergo massive changes as it seeks a new organogram, firearms, uniforms with rank badges, new laws and new service rules to turn into a modern and efficient force.
“In the proposed organogram, we have demanded increasing the manpower up to 8,505 from the existing 1706, as we have long been suffering from lack of adequate staff,” DNC Director General (DG) Mohammed Jamal Uddin Ahmed told BSS on Sunday.
“We have also proposed more manpower for the intelligence wing as part of the plan of strengthening it so that it can play a vital role in curbing drug trade and abuse by gathering advance information,” he added.
“We have also proposed for firearms for the DNC members as it is very much difficult to conduct drives against drug traders having firearms by the unarmed DNC personnel,” he said, adding that the government has in principle agreed to give firearms to the force.
“A proposal of keeping a provision of death sentence as the highest punishment for yaba trading has also been made in the new law. As per the proposal, Shisha will be included in the list of narcotics,” he added.
“We have also proposed to construct 200-bed cure centres in the divisional headquarters,” he informed.
The DNC chief said that only a department or the government cannot stop drug abuse in society. All should work from their respective positions to raise awareness against this social curse, he added.
DNC Director (operation) Syed Toufique Uddin Ahmed told BSS that they have so far sent 18 to 20 proposals to the government demanding more manpower, firearms, uniforms with rank badges, and strengthening the intelligence wing of the DNC to facilitate the force to effectively fight drug abuse.”
The DNC also proposed for new a service policy, nationwide wireless network, and four chemical laboratories in divisional cities, he added.
It has also been proposed to provide DNS members with appropriate training, minimum one vehicle for each of the district offices, making online 37 services of the DNC and purchasing new drug detecting machines.
