DMP`s spl drive ahead of Ashura, Durga Puja

UNB, Dhaka :Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will start a special drive in the capital early Sunday to ensure smooth observance of Holy Ashura and celebration of Durga Puja.The special operation will continue till October 21, said a DMP senior official.Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community, will start on Sunday and it will end on the night of October 22 through idol emersion, while the holy Ashura, a religious mourning day for the Muslims, will be observed on October 24.The DMP official said law enforcement agencies, including the Detective Branch (DB), were asked to collect information if there is any threat to destabilise the capital over the two religious programmes.Law enforcers were also instructed to take instant action against any possible untoward incident during Durga Puja as well as Tajia procession commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the official said preferring not to be named.Besides, the drive will be launched against listed criminals and illegal firearms in the capital, he added.According to him, police patrol in the city will be intensified to avert any unpleasant incident in the capital during the two religious programmes.Contacted, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of DMP Muntashirul Islam said police occasionally conduct special operations for ensuring the security of city dwellers. “Police have already beefed up security for the celebrations of Durga Puja as well as observance of the holy Ashura,” the DC (Media) added.Home Minister Assaduzzaman Khan Kamal last week said law enforcers have been instructed to ensure security during Durga Puja keeping in mind their last year’s experiences.Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque in a meeting held at the Police Headquarters on October 6 directed the field-level officers to remain vigilant so that no vested quarter can disrupt the law and order situation over Durga Puja.
