Staff Reporter :
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam on Saturday said that police had sent a proposal to the government requesting to ban the militant group Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). The proposal is now lying with the Ministry of Home.
The organization has claimed the responsibility
of killing blog’s science writer Dr Avijit Roy, bloggers Washikur Rahman Babu and Ananta Bijoy Das.
According to police, Ansarullah Bangla Team is closely connected with the Al-Qaeda and follows its ideology.
ABT works as a spokesman of all the militant organizations in the country. Various militant groups receive training in its name on the mountains and remote areas, he added.
In the wake of rising militant activities, the government is set to ban at least 10 religious organisations soon. The move comes at a time when five outlawed and seven blacklisted organisations have been operating defying the government ban and vigilance of the law enforcement agencies.
Earlier, the government has banned Hizb-ut-Tahrir on October 22 in 2009. The BNP-Jamaat government outlawed Shahadat-e-al Hikma on February 9, 2003; Jama’at-ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB) on February 23, 2005; and Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami (Huji) on October 17, 2005.
