City Desk :
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is making a crime chart on thieves as a good number of thefts have taken place in houses and business entities in the capital in recent times.
DMP has directed deputy commissioners (DCs) and officers-in-charge (OCs) to gather information on the thieves arrested earlier, a senior police officer told the Daily Sun on Saturday.
The DCs and the OCs have been asked to know whether the thieves freed on bail have any involvement in the recent thefts.
They have also been asked to detect all the theft incidents in the last few months.
DMP statistics show that more than 353 theft incidents were committed in houses and business entities in the capital in June and July this year.
The statistics of theft incidents in August could not be obtained, but the incidents taking place in the month might go beyond July. About 191 thefts took place in July.
In the current month, two thefts were committed in the residences of two former and incumbent senior police officers and one at the house of a councillor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
AKM Hafiz Akhter, additional commissioner (crime) of DMP, said that the increase in the prices of essential goods was contributing to the theft incidents.
“Disequilibrium is prevailing among people. There is a matter of price hike behind the growing theft incidents,” he said.
But, the officer said DMP members had the ability to control the situation.
Seeking not to be named, a DMP officer said they arrested many thieves in connection with the recent theft incidents.
Many arrestees said they committed thefts after being unemployed, the officer said.
On August 23, thieves looted gold ornaments weighing about 40 bhories from former additional IGP Kazi Mozammel Haque’s duplex apartment at Eskaton in Ramna.
The criminals entered the apartment after cutting its window grills. A case was filed with Ramna Police Station in this regard.
On August 18, a theft was committed at the house of DNCC Councillor Ishak Mia in Kuril Miabari area of the capital.
On August 15, another theft was committed at Superintendent of Police Mostafizur Rahman’s residence at Uttara. Tk 5.50 lakh was stolen from the residence.
