Staff Reporter :A fire broke out at the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Tuesday afternoon.Panic gripped the patients, their attendants, and staff members of the hospital as they tried to run helter-skelter for safety, creating a horrible situation, said Partha Sankar Paul, Resident Surgeon of the Burn Unit of DMCH.However, no casualty was reported due to the incident, said Dr Partha Sankar Paul. “We are carrying investigation into the incident,” he said. Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD) Duty Officer Atiqul Islam said, “The fire originated from an air conditioner outside the Room No. 317 on the third floor of the unit around 1:45pm, which scared the patients and others.” At least three fire-fighting units rushed to the spot and doused the flame around 2:30pm, the Fire Service official said. As patients tried to rush out from the unit hurriedly, a horrible situation was created, said the Fire Service duty officer. Earlier, a fire also broke out in the hospital’s burn unit on March 26 this year.Previously on January 9, 2012, a fire scare also led to the evacuation of over 200 patients of the Burn Unit. A smoke and flames were seen in the unit, sparking off the fears.
