BSS, Dhaka :
Joint general secretary of the ruling Awami League Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said lack of national unity is the big impediment to smooth and balanced democracy in the country. “A division line had been drawn in independent Bangladesh through the killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members on August 15 in 1975. From that brutal incident, a crack developed in the national unity, state power was usurped by undemocratic governments one after another resulting in the big impediment to establishing democracy and smoothing its path,” he said.
Hanif said this on Tuesday while speaking as the guest of honour at a roundtable discussion in the city.
The Election Working Group (EWG) organised the roundtable on “Bringing transparency in financing in the politics of Bangladesh” at the auditorium of CIRDAP (Centre for Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific). Member of the EWC managing committee Harun-Ar-Rashid moderated the roundtable, also attended by Jatiya Party presidium member Golam Mohammad Kader and adviser to BNP chairperson and former education minister Dr Osman Faruque as guests of honour while executive director of Transparency International, Bangladesh, Dr Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of Democracy Watch Taleya Rahman and EWC director Abdul Alim were the discussants, among others.
