A rape accused was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Bhadalia in Bashkhali municipality area early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Majid, 30, son of Ledu Mia of West Chechuria Ghonapara of the upazila. He is the prime accused in a gang rape case filed with Bashkhali Police Station, said Rab.
Tipped off, a team of Rab-7 conducted a drive in the area early in the morning whe Majid along with others were gathered there, said assistant superintendent of Rab-7 Mahmudul Hasan Mamun.
When Rab challenged them, they opened fire on the elite force members, forcing them to fire back.
At one stage, Majid was caught in the line of fire while the others managed to flee the scene.
Rezaul Karim Majumdar, officer-in-charge of Bashkhali Police Station, said Majid and his associates took a 19-year-old girl to a mango orchard at Boilcharri in the upazila on April 27 and violated the girl in turns.
Later, the victim’s brother filed a case with Bashkhali Police Station. One firearm and six bullets were recovered from the spot.
International human trafficking gang member held in Meherpur

Police arrested a member of a international human trafficker gang from Bhalodanga village Gangi upazila early Monday.
The arrestee is Abdus Samad Azad, 30, son of late Habibur Rahman and teacher of a Hafizia madrasa.
Hasan Imam, officer-in-charge of Criminal Investigation Department, said that a case was filed against Samad on June 5 with Alamdanga Police Station in Chuadanga in connection with human trafficking. On secret information that he was staying at his father-in-law’s house, a team on police raided the house and arrested him in the morning.
Human traffickers killed 30 migrant workers, including 26 Bangladeshi nationals, in Libya on May 28.
The tragedy occurred in a smuggling warehouse in Mezda, near the city of Gharyan, southwest of Tripoli.
In primary interrogation, Samad confessed that he was an active member of the gang who were involved in human trafficking to Libya.
According to locals, Once Samad used to live in Libya. After returning home from there he got involved in human trafficking activities.

A former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League was hacked to death by some miscreants in Handial Nikripara area of Chatmohor upazila on Sunday evening.
The deceased was identified as Habibur Rahman Habib, 21, son of Abdur Razzak of the area and former organising secretary of Handial union BCL unit. He was B.A first year student Chatmohor Government College. A group of miscreants attacked Habib in front of a local school around 7:30pm and hacked him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured, said Sajib Shahreen, assistant superintendent of Chatmohor circle police. Later, he died on the way to hospital, said the ASP adding that there was an internal clash between two groups of local BCL. Habib locked into an altercation with Rasel, general secretary of union BCL, over a cricket match in the afternoon, said Abdul Alim, president of union BCL unit.
Missing boatman’s body recovered from Rupsha river

The body of a boatman, who went missing after falling in the Rupsha river five days ago, was retrieved from 2 no Custom Ghat area of the city on Monday morning.
The deceased was identified as Md Hannan Majhi, 55.
Amit Kumar , in-charge of Rahimnagar River Police, said locals spotted the floating body in front of Roky Dockyard around 7:30am. On information, police recovered the body.
Later, family members identified the body as Hannan. Hannan went missing after he fell down from his boat in Jailkhana Ghat area on June 10.
Bangladeshi killed in BSF firing in Naogaon

A Bangladeshi was shot to death by the members of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along Porsha border in Naogaon at early hours on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Subhas Roy, 37, son of Bhulu Roy of Turipara village in the upazila.
BSF members from Agrabad camp opened fire on a group of Bangladeshis while entering Nitpur border to bring cattle, leaving Subhas dead on the scene, Naogaon-16 Border Guard Bangladesh commanding officer Lt Col Ariful Islam confirmed.
The body was kept under the custody of BSF.
3 held with 1.5 lakh yaba pills in Cox’s Bazar

Members of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) arrested three persons and recovered around 1.5 lakh contraband yaba pills from Rajapalong UP of Ukhia Upazila of the district on Monday morning.
The arrestees are- Md Jobaer, 21, Md Bappi, 20 of Korbunia village and Sheikh Anowar, 20, of Purbo Dekhulia village of the district.
On secret information, a team of BGB Cox’s Bazar Battalion (BGB-34) of Rezu Amtali BOP
conducted a drive near Tulatoli Joliler Goda area of the district around 5am. They challenged the passengers of a Kutupalang bound easy-bike coming from Myanmar and arrested the peddlers with 150,000 pieces of Burmese Yaba tablets, said a BGB press release here.
The net worth of the tablets is about Taka 45 crore, added the release.
The detainees were sent to Ukhia Police Station.
Lalmonirhat District Judge receiving treatment at CMH for Covid-19

District and Session Judge Mohamamd Ferdous Ahmed of Lalmonirhat district has been infected with coronavirus.
The judge is now undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka, said Lieutenant Colonel Sazzad, son-in-law of the Justice. Justice Ferdous Ahmed, 58, went to Lalmonirhat on June 1 and returned to Dhaka on June 4 after completing his judicial activities. Later, he tested positive for coronavirus and got admitted to CMH. He was shifted to the ICU of the hospital following respiratory problems. The physical condition of the Justice is stable, he said. Bangladesh on Monday reported 3099 new coronavirus cases in the span of 24 hours, raising the number of total confirmed cases to 90,619.
The deadly virus claimed 38 more lives during the same period, taking the death toll in the country to 1209 as of Monday.
