Female CU student ‘kills herself’

A female student of the Department of Public Administration of Chittagong University reportedly took her own life at her home in Dewanbazar of Chattogram city on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Nilom Dhar Arpa, 23. She was a student of academic year 2013-14 and graduated last year.
Jahirul Haque Bhuiyan, in-charge of Chattogram Medical College Hospital police outpost, said Arpa hanged herself with a scarf at 11pm at her home at Jalal Colony area in Dewan Bazar.
She was brought to the hospital, where the duty doctor announced her dead, said Bhuiyan adding that the reason of death will be confirmed after autopsy.
The brother of the deceased, who appeared with the body, could not say anything about the reason behind the apparent ‘suicide’.

‘Rapist’ killed in Rajshahi ‘gunfight’

A suspected rapist was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) near Pirgachha Bazar of Rajshahi’s Puthia upazila early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Ekhlas Uddin, 20, son of Kashem Mia of Gandagohali village of Puthia.
Officer-in-Charge of Puthia Police Station Rezaul Islam said Ekhlas violated his sister-in-law who is a seventh grader on January 25. Later, the victim took her own life. Her father filed a case with Puthia Police Station after his daughter’s death, the OC said..
Quoting Rab members, he said as Ekhlas was also a drug trader, law enforcers went to arrest him at Pirgachha village.
As soon as the Rab team reached the spot, Ekhlas opened fired shots at them, triggering a gunfight, the OC said.
He was taken to the upazila hospital after the skirmish where doctors declared him dead.
Rab members also seized a pistol, two bullets, a shooter gun and 480 pieces of Yaba pills from the deceased’s possession, he added.

2 siblings among 4 children drown in Gazipur

Four children including two siblings have drowned in a ditch in Bhawal Mirzapur area of Gazipur district.
The deceased are: Ibrahim and Tania, children of Touhid Mia; Mishti, daughter of Ziarul; and Farhad, son of Shamim. They all were residents in Purba Bhawal Mirzapur area.
Police and victims families said the children went out of their homes around 2:30pm on Monday for playing. Since then, they were missing.
Local people spotted the floating bodies in a pond around 6:15pm and then informed police.
Joydevpur police recovered the bodies at night.
Shamsunnahar, Superintendent of Gazipur Police, said the children drowned in the deep ditch full of rain waters. The bodies have been handed over to the families as they have no allegation.

Covid-19: 543 cases, 385 recoveries in Rangamati

Rangamati on Tuesday reported 32 more coronavirus cases while no cases reported the previous day.
The virus cases now stand at 543 while 385 corona patients were recovered in the district.
Dr Mostafa Kamal, who is working as the focal person for the Covid-19 response team in the district, said among the newly contracted persons, the highest number of 26 cases are in the district town.
Civil surgeon Dr Bikash Khisa said 340 cases, of the total 543, are in the town and the second highest 92 cases in Kaptai upazila.
So far, eight persons died of the deadly virus in the district.
A total of 3,526 persons in quarantine in the district -1,241 in institutional quarantine and 2,285 in in home quarantine. Among them, 3,475 persons were released from the quarantine and 51 still in quarantine..
