2 commit suicide in Rajshahi

Two people including a housewife reportedly committed suicide in separate incidents in the district town on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Marufa Aktar, 19, wife of Jahid Hasan of Nawdapara and Sajid Ahmed, 19, son of Nurul Islam of Baharampur.
Officer-in-Charge of Rajpara Police Station Shahadat Hossain Khan said that Sajid jumped from the rooftop of their building in the early morning as his father scolded him over a trivial matter.
Marufa hanged herself from the eilincgfan of her room after having a family feud with her husband in the morning.
Their bodies were sent to Rajshahi Medical Hospital for autopsy, the OC said.

A slap gets returned with murder in Khulna

A college student was stabbed to death at Naihati in Rupsha upazila of Khulna on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Suman Sheikh, 26, a student of Rupsha Degree College and son of Afjal Sheikh of Naihati.
Molla Jakir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rupsha Police Station, said the motive for the crime was previous enmity.
One Mahmdudullah, 24, son of Abul Bashar of the area, stabbed Suman at Naihati intersection around 8 pm and fled the scene, the OC said quoting locals.
Suman was first taken to Rupsha Upazila Health Complex where doctors referred him to Khulna Medical College Hospital. However, doctors at the KMCH found him dead.
According to locals, Suman slapped Mahmudullah a few days back as he smoked weed. Since then, they had been at odds.
Police have arrested a man for his suspected involvement in the incident, added the OC.

Man, daughter go missing in Sunamganj boat capsize

A man and his three-year-old daughter went missing when a boat sank in Shoitankhali Haor in Dharmapasha upazila of the district on Saturday night.
Those went missing are Samal Uddin, 25 and Tanjina, 3 of Halikanda village in upazila.
The incident took place around 8 pm when the boat carrying six people sank in the haor during storm, said Delwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Dharmapasha Police Station.
Four people managed to swim ashore while Salam and his daughter remained missing.
The divers from local fire service conducted a salvage operation but failed to trace them till 9 am on Sunday morning.

NESCO staff dies of Covid-19 in C’nawabganj

An employee of Northern Electricity Supply Company Ltd (NESCO) of Chapainawabganj died of coronavirus at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Ataur Rahman, 53, an accountant of NESCO and a resident of Daudpur Road in the district town.
Civil Surgeon Dr Zahid Nazrul said Ataur Rahman had been undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital after contracting the virus.
On Friday, he was shifted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital following deterioration of his health condition where he died around 1 am.

A total of 291 people tested positive for coronavirus in the district till Saturday.
8 fishermen arrested with current nets, pesticides in Sundarbans

Detective branch (DB) of police arrested eight fishermen on Saturday for fishing at Bhadra river of Kalabagi village under Dakop upazila despite a one-month ban of fishing in the Sundarbans, said a DB press release on Sunday.
Police also seized four different size boats, 1200 feet current nets, huge rotten fish and fishing pesticides from their possession.
The arrested are Tuhin Mir, Sohrab Sana, Depak Sarkar, Tapon Sarkar, Neshit Mondal, Alok Sarkar, Selim Sheikh and Miraz Mollick.
On a tip-off, a team of DB police conducted a drive at the river in Sundarbans and arrested the fishermen while they were netting fish by using pesticides, the release said.
A case was filed with Dakop police station in this connection.

Two die with Covid-19 at RMCH

Two people died from COVID-19 while another died with coronavirus like symptoms at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).
They died at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Corona ward of the hospital at different times of the day and night on Saturday. Two of them were infected with coronavirus and another one was admitted with coronavirus like symptoms, said the hospital’s deputy director Dr Saiful Ferdous.
The deceased who died with COVID-19 were dentified as Kazi Ataur Rahman, 53, of Sadar upazila in Chapainawabganj and Johra Khatun, 60, of Ishwardi upazila in Pabna.
The deceased who died with COVID-19 symptoms was identified as Abdus Sattar Khan, 63. He was a resident of Gazipur but used to live in Rajshahi with his son.
Dr Saiful Ferdous said samples of one people who died with coronavirus like symptoms have been collected.

Suspected robber’s bullet-hit body recovered in Madaripur

Police recovered the bullet-hit body of a suspected robber in Rajoir upazila of Madaripur on Sunday morning.
Deceased Uzzal Sheikh, 45, was an accused in seven cases including of arms and robbery. He was a resident of Muksudpur upazila of Gopalganj.
Locals spotted the body at Hasankandi area on Sunday morning and informed police.
Police recovered the body and sent it to local hospital morgue.
Rajoir Police Station inspector (investigation) Anwar Hossain said he might have been killed in exchange of fire over internal conflict of robber gang.

Three of a family die from coronavirus

Three members of a family in Haziganj upazila of Chandpur have died of COVID-19, the disease caused by novel coronavirus.
Deceased Abul Kashem Mia, 75, his son Abdul Awal, 48, and daughter Kamrunnahar, 50, were residents of Makimabad village in the upazila.
Among the trio, Awal first died of the disease on June 5. Then, his father and sister passed away from the virus on June 12 and July 18 respectively, local health authorities and locals said.
Haziganj Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr HM Shoyeb Ahmed Chishti said the upazila recorded a total 141 coronavirus cases and 17 deaths from the virus as of Saturday.

Editor of Satkhira daily dies with breathing complications

Mohsin Hossain Bablu, editor and publisher of Satkhira daily newspaper Ajker Potrika, died with breathing complications at a hospital in the district town early Sunday.
Mohsin and his wife Morzina Khatun, senior staff nurse of Sadar Hospital, had been suffering from fever and breathing problem for the last six to seven days and undergoing treatment staying at home, said civil surgeon Doctor Hussain Safat.
Mohsin, who had cardiac problems, suffered severe shortness of breathing around 1:00am.
Later, he was taken to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
Samples of Mohsin and his family members have been collected for the coronavirus test, said the civil surgeon
So far 34 people died from corona-like symptoms in the district and 12 people died from coronavirus.

Three held with 3,600 litres of shark oil in Chattogram

Three suspected smugglers were detained with a huge amount of shark oil from Cinema Palace area of Chattogram city on Sunday.
The detainees were identified as Rashed, 32, Kazu Sohel, 32, and Md Sagar, 27.
ASP Mahmudul Hasan Mamun, media officer of Rab-7, said they detained the trio from a mini-truck when they set up a check-post in the area early hours of the day.
Later, Rab members recovered 3,600 litres of shark oil from their possession and seized the truck.
The recovered oil is worth Tk21.6 lakh, he added.
