An activist Bangladesh Chhatra League drowned in a fountain on Chittagong University campus in Chattogram on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Saidul Rahman Munna, 23, an activist of Hathazari College unit BCL and son of Sirajul Haque of Fatehpur village in Hathazari upazila.
CU proctor Dr Rabiul Hasan Bhuiya said Munna along with some students went to the fountain area in the morning.
At one stage, he slipped into it and drowned.
On information, divers from local fire service went to the spot and recovered the body of Munna after two hours of frantic effort.
Candidate’s father among 5 held with Tk 7 lakh

Police detained the father of a Bogura-1 by-polls candidate and his four associates with Tk 7 lakh in Sonatala upazila of the district early Monday.
The detainees are: Md Entezar Rahman, 68, the father of independent candidate Yasir Rahmatullah Entezar, and his four associates-Md Rohsan Foysal, 24, Md Fardin Bin-Rashid , 20, Md Mikanur Islam, 26, and Jamal Hossain, 30.
On suspicion, local people stopped a microbus carrying Entezar and his associates at Garfatehpur area around 1:30 am. They also found election posters with the symbol of Yasir Rahmatullah and a bag containing Tk 7 lakh.
Being informed, police rushed there and detained them, said Sonatala Police Station inspector Zahid Hossain Mandal. Inspector Zahid said they were detained for allegedly distributing money to influence the Bogura-1 by election.
2 construction workers die from electrocution

Two construction workers died from electrocution in Kashiadanga Police Station area of Rajshahi city on Monday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Mohan Ali, 30, son of Munser Ali of Hargram Pashchimpara, and Ahmed Ali, 25, son of Arjad Ali of Pukuria Mahalla area, in the city.
Witnesses said they came in contact with a live electric wire while working in a construction site in Guripara area, leaving them critically injured.
They were rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared them dead. The police station officer in-charge Munsur Rahman Arif confirmed the matter.
Archbishop Moses M Costa dies

Holy Cross archbishop Moses M Costa of Chittagong Archdiocese died of heart attack at Square Hospital in Dhaka on Monday morning.
He was 70.
Father Kamal Corraya, director of St John Vianney Hospital in Tejgaon, told New Age that he came to Dhaka on June 10 and was admitted with high fever and later tested positive for Covid-19. The archbishop died of a sudden heart attack after recovering from the viral disease.
His body had been kept at Tejgaon for people to pay tribute and later then it would be taken to his village in Gazipur on Tuesday, he added.
Archbishop Costa was the secretary-general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Bangladesh and chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Healthcare Commission.

An eight-month old baby girl drowned in flood water at Goddimari village in Hatibandha upazila early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Alifa Akhter, daughter of Anwar Hossain.
Atiar Rahman, chairman of Goddimari union parishad, said that the minor girl slipped into the flood water and drowned early in the morning.
The overall flood situation in Lalmonirhat, Sunamganj, Kurigram and Nilphamari districts has worsened further due to increase of the river water levels following rainfall, leaving several lakh people marooned.
Training on women empowerment held in Mymensingh

A 5-day long online (virtual) training was started under the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) funded project “Linkages between Women’s Empowerment, Children’s Diet and Nutrition under Rapid Urbanization in Bangladesh” yesterday with the participation of 30 enumerators, who will collect field level information from the mothers of =3 children for conducting research.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Lutful Hassan of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) was present as the chief guest on this occasion. He said that everyone should be awakened for more development of nutrition added crops and it will be helpful for the health improvement of the mother and child.
He also mentioned that empowering women is one of the most important targets to achieve SDG goals. Bangladesh is producing enough food, still many urban and peri-urban children are not fed adequate diversified diet to their optimal physical growth and cognitive development. The child needs increased diversified nutrition to support rapid growth.
The government has taken adequate measures to deal with the women and children health situation. The Interdisciplinary Institute organizes this Training for Food Security (IIFS), Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Bangladesh. The Director of the IIFS Professor Dr. A. S. Mahfuzul Bari presided over the inaugural function. Dr. Sadika Haque is the Principal Investigator of this project. She said, the linkages between child nutrition and women’s empowerment is very important in our country.
The interaction with the child during the baby feeding and the environments are very important, because good care can tackle problems when food and health services are limited. Dr. Abu Torab Md. Abdur Rahim, Professor, Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Dhaka University, Dr. Hasmot Ali, Jivita Project, John Hopkins University; Dr. Mohammod Kamruj Jaman Bhuiyan, Dr. M. Nahid Sattar and Dr. Nazmul Haque Shapon attended the programme as co-PIs.
