CU VC, 5 family members infected with Coronavirus

Chittagong University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Shirin Akhter, five family members and two caretakers of her residence were infected with coronavirus.
“Seven of the 12 people of the VC’s house tested positive for coronavirus on Saturday night.” said Prof SM Monirul Hasan, CU Registrar (acting). Their samples were collected and tested at the university’s laboratory, he added.
Earlier on July 14, the Chittagong University was put under lockdown after 13 people including CU VC’s personal secretary and deputy registrar tested positive for the virus.
A CU notification on Saturday , said that the VC conducted different activities in the university area after it was put under lockdown to protect the teachers, officers and staff of the university from infection.
The CU VC is supposed to be shifted to Chattogram Combined Military Hospital on Sunday for better treatment. Bangladesh has so far reported 181,129 coronavirus cases and 2,305 deaths from it.

Jashore civil surgeon infected with Coronavirus

The civil surgeon of Jashore Dr Md Sheikh Abu Shahid has been infected with coronavirus. The test result came from the Jashore University of Science and Technology lab on Sunday.
Fifteen people, including the civil surgeon, were diagnosed with the Covid-19 today. With the new cases, total cases have risen to 993 in the district. Besides, so far 14 people died from coronavirus here.
The civil surgeon said that he is now in isolation at his official residence in the district town. Doctor Abu Maud will serve as acting civil surgeon in his absence, he said.

‘Yaba trader’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

A suspected yaba trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) early Sunday in Keyali Canal area nearing No-14 Bridge in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar.
The deceased was identified as Md Syed Alam, 35, son of Md Syed Ahmed of Teknaf Municipality.
Lt Col Mohammad Foysal Hasan Khan, commander, Teknaf BGB-2, said tipped off that a big consignment of drugs would enter Bangladesh from Myanmar, a patrol team of BGB took position in the area at around 2 am. BGB members noticed a man entered Bangladesh from Mynmar by swimming in the Naf River and met two people waiting there. As soon as the BGB men chased them all, the drug traders opened fire on the BGB men, forcing them to fire back in self-defence that triggered the gunfight, he added.
Later, BGB members found bullet injured Syed Alam and took him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex . He was later shifted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead. A LG gun including a round of cartridge and 40,000 Yaba pills were recovered from the spot.

2 held with narcotics in Shibalaya

Shibalaya Police arrested an alleged narcotics peddler from Shahili area of Shibalaya upazila on Saturday evening.
The arrestee was identified as Kalam Mollah (42) son of late Jhoru Mollah of village Shahili under Shibalaya upazila of the district.
“Acting on a tiff off, a team of police raided the house of Mollah and arrested him with 1.5 Kilogram of ganja”,
Firoj Kabir, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shibalaya Police Station told BSS on Sunday.

Earlier, Shibalaya Police in separate drive arrested another Selim (30) with ganja from his house of village Rupsha Nali under Shibalaya Upazila. O C Firoj Kabir said the drive will continue against drug peddlers.
400 families get food support amid Covid-19 crisis in Niamatpur

Over 400 poor and extreme poor families including 150 ethnic minority ones consisting around 2,000 people were given food support in order to enable them to fight the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
The distribution programme was arranged at Niamatpur Government Model High School in Niamatpur Upazila Headquarters under Naogaon district on Sunday.
Each of the households was given 20 kilograms of rice, five kilograms of potatoes, two kilograms of lentil and salt each, one kilogram of edible oil, suji and sugar each, three soaps, three face masks and some emergency medicines like paracetamol, vitamin C and anti-histacin tablets and saline packet as response to the Covid-19.
DASCOH Foundation distributed humanitarian assistance on behalf of the ‘Promotion of Social Partnership for Empowerment of Marginalized Communities project’ with financial support of BMZ and NETZ through maintaining social distancing and other safety measures.
Upazila Chairman Farid Ahmed, Union Parishad Chairmen Bazlur Rahman, Obaidul Haque, Badiuzzaman and Headmaster of the school Jahangir Kabir joined the programme with Assistant Commissioner (Land) Nilufa Sarker in the chair.
Speaking on the occasion, Jahid Ali, Area Coordinator of DASCOH Foundation, said the supports were given in the poverty pockets of Niamatpur Sadar, Bhabicha, Hazinagar and Chandannagar Unions under the upazila and the support is expected to secure food intake of the recipient families for two to three weeks.
The project has been working in the areas focusing its support on income and food security for extremely poor people, primary education for children of extreme poor families and promotion of human rights.
Main thrust of the current support package is to enable them to avoid starvation and refrain themselves from forced sale of productive assets that they had received earlier as a part of livelihood development support initiated on behalf of the project.
Ali said many of the support receivers who are mainly agri-labourers have already borrowed money from informal sources and fallen to the trap of advanced labour sale in their locality.
He mentioned more humanitarian support will be required to secure their food intake to overcome the long term negative impacts of the ongoing troubled situation including shrinking income opportunities of the extreme poor vulnerable groups.

3 female members of cheating gang arrested

Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) arrested three female members of a cheating gang for collecting money by trapping in sex allegation.
The arrest were Swarna Haldar, 28, of Nalua under Bakerganj upazila, Mahinur Begum, 45, Ferdousi Aktar Ruma, 33, tenants of flats at Vatikhana under Kawnia police station of the city.
Khairul Alam, Deputy Commissioner of BMP (north) , holding a press conference at his office on Sunday noon, said Mahinur purchasing mango from fruit trader Hasan Khan of Vatikhana on Friday allured to purchase more mango from him and asked to supply that to her residence and collect money on Friday last.
So, when fruit trader Hasan Khan after going to the flat of Mahinur at Kabir Manjil of Vatikhana, the three arrested females and their male cohort Nadim Haoladar, 22, trapped the fruit trader and shot obscene naked pictures and videos of him.
Giving threat to publish those in social media demanded Tk. two lakh as toll to prevent that. Fruit trader Hasan succeeded to free himself by paying Tk 11 thousand instantly and promising to pay rest in future.

Then law enforcers started drives to arrest the blackmailers and succeeded to arrest the three female members of the cheating gang, while male gang member Nadim managed to flee from arrest, BMP official added.
In primary interrogation, the arrest confessed that they collected money by blackmailing different people for long.
Police trying to arrest other members of the gang and after interrogation and lodging case. They would be handed over to court, police sources said.

Culturalman with virus symptoms dies, infected 1717 in Kishoreganj

A Cultural and former footballer with virus symptoms died at Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital on Saturday night.
The man was Mahafuzur Rahman Kamrul (57) at Kharampatti (Station Road) in Kishoreganj town.
Victim relatives and Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital officials said the man had been suffering from fever, cold and, diabetes for last few days. At least 1717 more people have been infected with covid-19 in Kishoreganj district in the last 48 hours till Sunday noon.
Civil Surgeon of Kishoreganj Dr. Minibus Rahman told the New Nation that the number of virus patients in the district is now 1717, total dead 30 and at least 1418 men recovered from coronavirus in Kishoreganj.
Among infected men, in Kisoreganj sadar is 413, Bhairab 411, Ossoinpur 36,,Karimganj 111, ,Pakundia 85, Tarail 65 , Nikki 17, Hossionpur 38, Bajitpur 148, Itna 30, Mitamoion 38, Austagra 12 Kuliarchar 105 and Katiadi 102.

Lightning kills boy in Pakundia

A 14 years boy was killed by lightning strike during storm at Nayapara in Pakundia Upazila of Kishoreganj on Sunday morning.
The boy was identified as Raju Miah (14), son of Md. Aladdin in Patuabanga village of Pakundia Upazila.
The victim Raju went to feeding duck and that time a lighting struck him and died instantaneously.
Pakundia Police Station Officer – in–Charge (OC) Mofizur Rahman confirmed this matter.
