A physician died from coronavirus at a hospital in the capital on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Dr Amjad Hossain, 60, deputy assistant medical officer (retd) and owner of Rajani Clinic in Benapole.
Jashore Civil Surgeon Dr Mohammad Shaheen said Dr Amjad Hossain died at the ICU of Regent Hospital in Dhaka’s Mirpur on Saturday night.
Dr Amjad, a resident of Benapole Bhaberber area, left behind wife, one son, a daughter and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
He was buried at his village home at Bhaberber on Sunday.
Forty-three physicians have died from coronavirus as of June 18, said sources at Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA).
Cumilla journo hacked mercilessly for ‘uncovering corruption’

A local journalist has mercilessly been hacked allegedly by followers of a local Union Parishad Chairman at his residence at Kajiatal village in Cumilla’s Muradnagar upazila on Saturday.
Shariful Alam Chowdhury is a correspondent of Daily Samakal and general secretary of Muradnagar Press Club.
The assailants did not even spare his elderly parents from the attack when they tried to save their son. They both received injuries.
Abdul Matin Chowdhury, the father and also a valiant freedom fighter, said the attack was carried out in retaliation of a report that his son wrote uncovering corruption, irregularities and nepotism of Darora Union Parishad Chairman Shahjahan.
On Saturday noon, a number of goons patronized by the UP chairman came to the house, dragged Shariful out to the yard and hacked him brutally with sharp weapons. They also beat him with iron pipes and hammers.
The father said when he and Sharif’s mother tried to restrain the attackers, they also received the same treatment.
Contacted, AKM Manjur Alam, officer-in-charge of Muradnagar Police Station, said they on information went to the spot, rescued the journalist and sent him to hospital.
“We’ve immediately arrested Chairman Shahjahan after Sharif’s father filed a case over the incident,” he said, adding that they are trying to arrest the other accused.
Five more die with fever, cold-related problems in Cumilla

Five people, including a woman, died with fever and cold-related problems at Cumilla Medical College Hospital in the last 24 hours until Sunday morning.
The deceased are- Noorjahan, 80 and Nuruzzaman, 88 of Burichang upazila, Abdul Halim, 68, of Nangolkot upazila, Tipu Sultan, 46 of Sahrasti upazila, Mosharraf Hossain, 53 of Brahmanpara.
Dr Sajeda Khatun, director of CMCH, said the five people were undergoing treatment at the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) and Corona Unit.
So far 121 people have died at Cumila Medical College Hospital’s corona unit.
Among them, 62 died of coronavirus while 59 with symptoms of the viral infection.
According to the District Civil Surgeon Office, 3,864 people have been infected with Covid-19 in the district and 1,646 of them made full recovery.
Bangladesh on Saturday reported 3,288 new coronavirus cases and 42 deaths in the last 24 hours until the morning.
The health authorities have so far reported 159,679 coronavirus cases and 1,997 deaths.
Earlier on Friday, Bangladesh ranked 8th globally, with 26,598 new Covid-19 cases in the last seven days, according to World Health Organization (WHO).

The body of a youth who had been missing for five days was recovered from the zero point of Patgram bordering area in Lalmonirhat on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Torikul Islam, 28, son of Ajijul Islam of Burimari in the upazila.
Torikul went missing five days ago when he went to a local bazar and did not return home, said his family members. Later on Sunday, members of police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered Torikul’s bullet-hit body from zero point with the help ofBorder Security Force (BSF) of India, said Officer-in-Charge of Patgram Police Station Mozammel Haque.
Legal action will be taken after investigating into the matter, he said.
