Erosion takes serious turn in Lalmonirhat as flood water recedes

As water started to recede, erosion on the left bank of the Teesta River in Lalmonirhat upazila has taken a serious turn.
Strong current is devouring houses and farmlands as the water level of the river has been receding for the last two days.
Locals are passing days in panic.
Though, the Teesta water was flowing above the danger level for four days, the water level has started to recede from Monday and now flowing below the danger level.
The water level of the river at the Dalia Point of Hatibandha upazia has been marked 52.5cm which is 2cm lower than normal flow, said Rabiul Islam, executive engineer of Teesta Barrage Project of Dalia.
From Monday morning, the flood situation started to improve in the district.
With the recession of flood water, the sufferings of flood victims have increased also.
Severe erosion has occurred in Char Gokunda of Sadar upazila, Kutirpar of Aditmari, Chandimari, Dakshin Balapara, Shailmari Char of Kaliganj, Saniajan, Sindurna, Dauabari and Gaddimari of Hatibandha upazila.
In the last two days, more than a hundred houses in the district have been devoured by the Teesta. Hundreds of houses, establishments and crop lands have been damaged. The people of Teesta embankment are spending sleepless nights in fear of erosion, said the affected people.
They sought the interference of the government to build a permanent dam by dredging the Teesta to avoid floods and erosion on its banks.

Coronavirus cases jump to 4,462 in Sylhet division

With the detection of 169 more cases in the Sylhet division, the total confirmed coronavirus cases have jumped to 4,462. Doctor Sultana Razia, Sylhet divisional office director (health) at the Directorate General of Health Services, came up with the information on Tuesday noon.
Of the total new cases, 109 were detected in Sylhet, 10 in Sunamganj, 39 in Habiganj and 11 in Moulvibazar.
Of the total infected patients in the division, coronavirus cases now stands at 2,457 in Sylhet district, 982 in Sunamganj, 593 in Habiganj and 430 in Moulvibazar.
At present, 267 coronavirus patients are undergoing treatment in the four districts.
Besides, so far 2,227 people made recovery in the division. Of the total infected patients, 75 have died.

Chattogram Port organises ‘ biggest ever’ auction

Chattogram Port Customs authority started auctioning off goods of 361 containers, the biggest ever auction in its history.
Cars, frozen food, fruits, fish and other products of 361 containers were put in open auction for interested buyers at the port yard at 9am on Tuesday , said the Chattogram Port Authority.
Farid Al Mamun, deputy commissioner, auction unit of the port, said auction products were exhibited since Wednesday to Friday for buyers.
Various goods in 361 containers will be sold out in 174 separate lots as its owners failed to release their products in time from the port, he said.
The products include- four luxury cars, 150 tonnes onion, 174 tonnes buffalo meat, 24 containers of apple, 729 tonnes various animal meats, 40 containers of garment products, nine tonnes fish, eight containers of art paper and 28 containers of various machineries, said Mamun. The customs activities at the country’s largest port remained literally closed during the last three months due to Covid-19 pandemic.
