RU teacher suspended for derogatory FB posts about Nasim

The Rajshahi University authorities suspended Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department assistant professor Kazi Jahidur Rahman after his arrest on charge of making derogatory remarks about late Awami League leader Muhammad Nasim on Facebook.
The decision was taken in the 499th syndicate meeting of the university held at vice-chancellor’s house around 10 am on Saturday, said University proctor Professor Lutfor Rahman.
University vice-chancellor Professor M Abdus Sobhan presided over the syndicate meeting.
The teacher was arrested from his residence at RU campus quarter around 2:00am on June 18 in a case filed under the Digital Security Act, said Md Asaduzzaman, assistant sub-inspector of Motihar police station of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.
Advocate Tapos Kumar Saha, a resident of Sagorpara area in Rajshahi city filed the case under 25, 28 and 31 sections of the act against Kazi Jahidur Rahman. The RU teacher criticised Nasim in two Facebook posts on June 1 and 2 at that time when the former minister was battling for life at a hospital in Dhaka.

Freedom fighter dies of Covid-19 in Bogura

Freedom Fighter and veteran journalist Md Saiduzzaman Sarker Tara died from coronavirus on Friday night. He was 70.
Saiduzzaman, a senior member of Bogura Press club and also executive editor of Weekly Hatiar Newspaper, was undergoing treatment at Mohammad Ali Hospital and tested positive for the virus.
He was also organizing secretary of Sector Commanders Forum of Rajshahi divisional committee.
Shafiq Amin, residential medical officer of the hospital said that Saiduzzaman was admitted to the hospital on June 25 following breathing problem and breathed his last at night.

Two killed in Chattogram

The prime accused in a Jubo League leader murder case was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Satkani upazila early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Md Samrat Sohel, the prime accused in Jubo League leader Mosaddekur Rahman murder case.
Safiul Kabir, officer-in-charge of Satkania Police Station, said that after arresting Sohel they conducted a drive with him in Kutubur Dighir Par area around 2:30am to recover the knife which was used to hack Mosaddekur. When the police team approached the area, a gang of drug traders opened fire on police from their hideout, forcing them to fire back that triggered the skirmish, said the OC.
Sohel received bullet and died on the spot, he added.
Five policemen were also injured, claimed the OC adding that they recovered drugs from the hideout.
Earlier on Monday, Mosaddek was stabbed to death during an altercation with Sohel as he protested Sohel’s criminal activities, said Md Nezam Uddin, chairman of Satkania Sadar Union. Meanwhile, a teenage boy was stabbed to death at Madya Halishahar area of the port city on Friday night over a trifling matter.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Sagor, 18, driver of a human hauler (locally named as Tomtom). Sukanto Chakraborty, officer-in-charge of Bandar Police Station, said Sagor had an altercation with some local youths over fare on Thursday.
At one stage of the altercation, they threatened Sagor with death. As a sequel to the altercation, the youths stabbed him around 10:30pm, leaving him critically injured. Later, he died on the way to hospital.
Meanwhile, another youth was injured when he came to rescue Sagor, said the OC adding that they are trying to arrest the accused.
