Testing of coronavirus samples at the PCR lab of the microbiology department Abdul Malek Ukil Medical College in Noakhali has remain suspended for the last three days due to kit shortage.
Some 1,500 samples from greater Noakhali and Laxmipur, including 952 from Feni, are currently awaiting tests. Fazle Elahi Khan, assistant professor and lab head of the medical college, said on Monday night that they contacted the health department as there was a shortage of necessary kits since last week.
They were allotted 1,500 red kits. But the PCR machine they have needs yellow kit. They can’t change it because there is no yellow kit. It may take another two to three days to get the kits, he said.
Dr Dipan Majumder said that if they test 282 samples in two shifts every day, they need about two and a half thousand kits a week. Since May 11, 7,600 samples have been tested at the lab. Apart from Noakhali, samples from Feni, Laxmipur and Chandpur districts are also tested at the lab.
As there is no kit, everyone has been requested not to bring samples to the lab for the time being, he said.
Noakhali University of Science and Technology lab co-ordinator Professor Newaz Mohammad Bahadur said that they have also started testing corona samples from May 11. So far, about 6,750 samples have been tested. Their lab has a capacity of testing 150-200 samples daily. However, they have 600-700 red kits that will last another four-five days. In the meantime, they have approached the health department for the supply of kits.
Laxmipur civil surgeon infected with Covid-19

Doctor Md Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury, the civil surgeon of Laxmipur, has been diagnosed with coronavirus.
Besides, 12 more people have tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24-hour.
With these, confirmed cases in the district has reached 609, the civil surgeon’s office said Tuesday.
The civil surgeon was admitted to the capital’s Anwar Khan Modern Medical College Hospital on Monday morning with fever and cold related issues where he was tested positive in the evening.
A total of 119,198 among 6,44,011 coronavirus tests carried out in Bangladesh have turned out to be positive. The health authorities have confirmed 3,412 cases after testing 16,292 samples in 24 hours until Tuesday.
Since March 18, the government said 1, 545 people have died of COVID-19.
3 killed in Noakhali fire

Three people were killed and two suffered burn injures in a devastating fire at Chairmanghat of Hatia upazila of Noakhali on Monday night.
The deceased were identified as Mahibul Islam Nipu, 40,and Rahmat Ullah , 35, and Abdul Khalek, 45.
According to local sources, the fire originated in an oil and LP gas shop owned by Mahibul at Chairmanghat Bazar around 9:30pm.
On information, three firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the after two and half an hours of frantic efforts with the help of locals.
They recovered the charred bodies of Mahibul and Rahmat from the spot and rescued Khaled with severe injuries, said Mohammad Nur Nabi, sub-officer of Subarnachar upazila fire station. Khaled was first admitted to Noakhali General Hospital from where he was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where he died around 6:30am on Tuesday, he said.
Besides, two firefighters were also injured in the fire incident. At least 16 shops were gutted in the devastating fire. Local administration and fire service formed two committees to investigate the incident.

Sumaiya, who’s dream was being a BCS admin cadre after completing graduation from Dhaka University, met a tragic death after being victimised of family violence for carrying out her studies.
Sumaiya, daughter of Siddiqur Rahman ofBolaripara area of the district, was reportedly tortured to death at her in-law’s house in Harishpur village of Sadar upazila on Monday.
Her dream was to pass the BCS exam and become an admin officer to help her husband and her family, said victim’s mother Nuzhat Sultana.
After finishing the master’s exam, Sumaiya was preparing herself. The result of her master final exam is to be released on Wednesday. However, She met a tragic death being victimised by family members of her in-law’s house for carrying out her studies.
On April 14, 2019, Sumaiya married unemployed Mostaq of Harishpur village following a relationship, according to victim’s family members.
After the marriage, Mostaq and her family members obstructed her for several times to stop her study.
Later, Sumaiya’s father Siddiqur Rahman, who was a renowned Islamic speaker, used to bear her daughter’s education and the needs of the unemployed son-in-law Mostaq.
The pressure of the son-in-law continued even after the death of Siddiqur Rahman about 8 months ago.
Along with bearing expense of family, Nuzhat Sultana was struggling to meet the needs of her son-in-law. For this reason, Sumaiya was taking preparation for a job.
But her unemployed husband Mostaq did not want to accept it. Sumaiya was repeatedly tortured by Mostaq and his family members.
She was also tortured by her husband on Monday morning. As, Sumaiya lost her conscious at one stage of torture, they left her at Natore Sadar Hospital.
Later, they informed to Sumaiya’s family that she had committed suicide, said Sumaiya’s mother.
At first, no party agreed to file a case in this incident.
In this situation, police recorded a UD case and handed over the body to her mother after autopsy investigation.
In the afternoon Sumaiya was buried in the city’s Garikhana graveyard.
Later, Sumaiya’s mother filed a murder case against Mostaq and his four family members around 1am on Tuesday. Police arrested Mostaq’s mother Syeda Maleka and sister Zakia Yasmin Juthi.
Mostaq and his mother Zakir Hossain remain absconding after the incident. The SP said that police is conducting drive to arrest rest accused.
‘Terrorist’ killed in Gazipur ‘gunfight’ with Rab

An alleged terrorist was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) early Tuesday in Tongi T&T Bazar area in Gazipur.
The deceased was identified as Jahangir Hossain Pinku, son of Abu Jafar, of Gosairchar village in Chandpur.
Md Kamruzzaman, assistant police super, Rab-1, said they were tipped-off that a group of drugs and arms traders were staying in the bazar area. A patrol team raided the area at around 1:30am.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the terrorists fired and in retaliation Rab was forced to fire back in self-defense. Rab later recovered bullet-injured Pinku and took him to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah General Hospital where doctor declared him dead, added Kamruzzaman.
There are 14 murder, drugs, and arms cases against Pinku, said Kamruzzaman.
