Covid-19: Cumilla doctor dies

An associate professor of paediatrics department at the central medical college who was infected with coronavirus, died on Saturday.
The deceased doctor, Dr Mujibur Rahman Ripon, was undergoing treatment at United Hospital in the capital, said Dr Safikur Rahman, Principal of Cumilla Central Medical College. He was a graduate of the fifth batch of Faridpur Medical College. He left behind his wife, who is also a doctor, and two sons.
Meanwhile, the health authorities on Saturday announced 3,240 new coronavirus cases across the country in the span of 24 hours, taking the total number to 108,775. The death toll from the various rose to 1,425 as another 37 infected people lost their lives during the period.

2 including college student electrocuted in Naogaon

Two people, including a college student, were electrocuted in separate incidents at Atrai and Badalgacchi upazilas on Friday.
The deceased were identified as HSC examinee Sagar Hossen, aged 23, a student of Naogaon Government College who lost his life in Badalgacchi. Officer-in-Charge of Badalgacchi Police Station Chowdhury Jobayer Hossain said Sagar was electrocuted while setting up a mike in a programme at Kolabazar in the afternoon.
The victim in Atrai was identified as 42-year-old Shahin Khandakar, son of late Mustafizur Rahman. Officer-in-charge of Atrai Police Station Md Moslem Uddin said Shahin died on the spot after he came into contact with an electric wire of Palli Bidyut in Phulbari village.

Philippine citizen dies with breathing problem in Chattogram

A Philippine citizen who had been suffering from breathing problem died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Ruyel Esterel Katan, an official of Saif Power Tech, a container handling company in Chittagong port. Doctor Aftabul Islam, deputy director of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) hospital said that the foreign citizen had been undergoing treatment at their hospital for the last 16 days. His sample was also sent for Covid-19 test but yet to get the test result. “We tried to shift him to a private hospital but failed to get a seat for him. Although there was a cabin at Holy Crescent Hospital, but the hospital authorities had no arrangement to ensure oxygen supply for him. We requested Saif Power Tech authorities for help in supplying oxygen, but they refused, said Sheikh Habibur Rahman, Chief of Staff of Philippine Consulate General in Chattogram. Later, he died around at CMCH around 10:30 pm.

‘Sorcery practitioner’ held for ‘raping’ 3 children in Gaibandha

A man pretending to be a practitioner of sorcery, has been arrested in Gaibandha’s Sundarganj upazile after he allegedly raped three children promising them to teach ‘dark magic’, police said Saturday.
The arrestee was identified as Faruk Hossain, a resident of Dharmapur village.
Abdullah Hilzaman, officer-in-charge of Sundarganj Police Station, said they arrested Faruk in a rape case filed by the father of the victims.
According to case statement, Faruk called three daughters – aged 10, 11 and 13, of Fakhar Uddin in the pretext of teaching them sorcery on Thursday (June 18) to the house of paralysed patient Ataur Rahman in Kanchibari union of the area.
Later, he raped the 13-year-child in the nearby area on that day and the two other children on Friday.
The 10-year-old child fell sick on Friday night and her parents were called there and the rape incident came into light. The rapist fled the area.
Locals said Faruk had been treating cancer, paralysed patients with his ‘sorcery or black magic’ in exchange for money at his home.
He used to take female children in the pretext of driving away ghosts and Jinn and raped the children, locals said.
According to Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum (BSAF) report ‘State of Child Rights in Bangladesh’ in January said that the country saw a spike in incidents of child rape and sexual assault on children last year compared to 2018.
The child rights advocacy group said 1,005 incidents of child rape were recorded last year, a 76.01 percent increase compared to the year before.
On average, about 84 children became victims of rape in every month of 2019, BSAF said.

Teesta water flowing above danger level in Nilphamari

Water level of the Teesta River in Nilphamari is flowing above the danger level following heavy rainfall and onrush water from upstream.
According to the source of Flood Forecasting warning Center of Water Development Board, “Water level at Dalia point of the Teesta river crossed the danger mark around 3am and is flowing 20cm above its danger mark around 9am.
The low-lying areas in Jaldhaka and Dimla uapzilas have been flooded due to rise in water level of the river.
Meanwhile, 44 water gates of Teesta Barrage have been kept open to control the flow of water.
Rabiul Islam, executive engineer of the Dalia division of the Water Development Board, Nilphamari, said the water of the Teesta River has been flowing above the danger level from 9 am on Saturday due to heavy rains in the last three days.
