Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Sunday said that distance based rickshaw fare will be fixed soon.
He also warned of taking legal action against battery run rickshaw and rickshaw van in his jurisdiction.
“All converted non-motorised vehicles, means rickshaws and rickshaw vans using batteries are illegal. Legal action would be taken against them from today if we find those in DSCC areas,” Mayor Taposh said it while inaugurating the registration renewal process of rickshaws, rickshaw-vans, pushcarts and horse carts at Nagar Bhaban.
The mayor said that rickshaw is a part of our urban heritage, and Dhaka is lovingly called ‘City of rickshaw’. So, we are not going to evict rickshaws from the city.
The mayor stressed on bringing non-motorised, slow-moving vehicles like rickshaws under new registration and renewal process to bring those under discipline.
He said a study is being conducted, following which they will be able to determine the roads that will be used for non-motorised vehicles and those to be used for motorised ones.
“After being elected as the city mayor it is my first move to make Dhaka a movable city, which was one of my election pledges,” Taposh said.
Replying to a query, the DSCC Mayor said, “Over last three decades no registration of rickshaws were done, and rickshaws are plying city roads illegally. We are now bringing the non-motorised vehicles under discipline.
DSCC will provide registration or renewal after scrutinising applications taking a certain fee.
The registration which started on September 13 will continue till September 27 as per the DSCC’s notice published earlier.
DSCC currently has 52,712 non-motorised documented vehicles, but many more are running illegally in the city streets.
