Dissimilar statements of police, RAB on militants

Staff Reporter :
The people already have been confused in view of the contradictory statements between the Rapid Acton Battalion (RAB) and the Counter Terrorism and Transitional Crime (CTTC) unit of Police centering Italian national Tavella murder and other militant attacks across the country.
The DG of the RAB Benzir Ahmed and the CTTC unit Chief Monirul Islam repeatedly have been issuing contradictory statements about the Gulshan café attack and Narayanganj raids.
They also disagreed about the neo-JMB chief and the number of present leaders of the banned group and the militants outfits’ participations in different attacks.
A confidential statement issued by the Police Headquarters on Wednesday exposed the rift between the two anti-militant forces.
The 10-point directive issued by Police HQ was circulated in view of a complaint from the head of the RAB.
In the directive, policemen have been asked to treat RAB men as “colleagues, not rivals.”
The directive has asked the police not to “attack anyone while on duty” and
ordered that in case of misconduct by a RAB official it should be reported to superiors.
Any untoward incident will be investigated by the chief of the police unit. The pictures of wrongdoing, if any, will also be taken.
But the question is why did the police issue such a directive, or why did the RAB chief send an official complaint against the policemen?
The RAB won’t give counter statement regarding the organizational position of slain Sarwar Jahan alias Abdur Rahman’s being chief of ‘Neo JMB’, said elite force’s Director General Benazir Ahmed.
Benzir on Thursday said it affirming previous statement.
Citing communications between Abdur Rahman and Tamim Chowdhury, the RAB had claimed that Abdur Rahman was the of chief the banned extremist outfit.
Benzir on October 21 had claimed that the real name of the Neo JMB chief was Sarwar Jahan, known in the extremist circle as Shaykh Abu Ibrahim Al-Hanif.
Sarwar alias Abdur Rahman, who died on October 8, was the Ameer and key financier of New JMB, a deadly outfit responsible for a series of targeted killings, including the Holey Artisan Bakery gun attack on July 1.
He also said that Tamim had communication with Sarwar before he was killed in a raid by the CTTC unit in Narayanganj on August 27. On the other hand, police on Wednesday claimed Abdur Rahman was rather a third-tier leader of the group.
The CTTC unit chief Monirul Islam claimed Abdur Rahman was in the lower ranks of the leadership.
Abdur Rahman died after jumping off a five-storey building during a raid in Ashulia on October 8.
“Gulshan attack mastermind Tamim Chowdhury, as a leader, maintained communication with the leaders immediately after him. He rarely met Abdur Rahman as he was a third-tier leader. They occasionally met during meetings,” he claimed. Asked about message, Monirul said that they had no idea about such communication after they had reached the spot around 6:15am. Members of other agencies or units could have taken position there the previous night. “We have got evidence in Tamim’s flat about his communicating with Tanvir Qadri [committed suicide during Azimpur raid] and Maj Jahid [killed at Rupnagar] before he was killed,” Monirul added.
Monirul claimed that the new JMB still had 22 members who are absconding. “There is no specific list of how many leaders they have.” So far, the law enforcers have killed 43 new JMB leaders and members, two committed suicide while Sarwar succumbed to injuries.
