Priority should be given to the regional development in the upcoming budget of the country. Redistribution of economy should also be ensured, discussants said at a seminar at Rajshahi University (RU) recently.
The seminar on pre-budget discussion was held by RU Economics Department Alumni Association titled “pre-budget discussion 2015-16: regional priority in development” at the University Momtazuddin Arts Building.
ANK Noman, Professor of Economics Department presented the key-note at seminar with Prof M Rafiqul Islam, president of the alumni association in the chair.
RU vice chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin graced the occasion as chief guest while Prof Mohammad Ali, chairman of the economics department was present as special guest.
Speakers at the seminar stressed to increase the budget for strengthening the economic capacity of regional area especially northern area of the country.
They urged the government to take immediate initiatives to back the navigability of Padma, Meghna and Jamuna rivers by allotting enough fund.
Taking stance against constructing bridge over Padma, the speakers emphasised on digging the rivers to flow naturally.
“If the rivers get back navigability, the country’s economic development would get new dimension by proper utilizing those rivers as well as people could use the land by the bank of the rivers in proper way”, speakers observed.
RU VC Prof Mizan in his speech said, the major object of budget should be redistribution of the wealth among the people so that the economy of the country could touch the desired position.
He also urged the government to increase the fund on education, health, agriculture and social security.
Among others, Prof Tarik Saiful Islam, Prof Shamsul Alam Bir Pratik, Prof AHM Mustafizur Rahman, Prof Akhter Hossain spoke at seminar.
