The ongoing road development project undertaken by Gazipur City Corporation has caused huge discontent among people due to indiscriminate acquisition of private lands.

Gazipur, one of the largest city corporations in the country, is now undertaking various development projects. Most of these developments works involve the construction of roads and their expansion in the city areas.
“We have undertaken the road development work as the city residents have long suffered from narrow and broken roads,” Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Md. Jahangir Alam told The New Nation.
Currently, there are 7,500km of roads in the city areas, the mayor said adding but these roads are not well off to facilitate such a big city.
Refute the allegation of improper compensation, Md. Jahangir Alam said, “The affected land owners are getting fair return of their acquired properties. If anybody denied of compensation, he or she should come my office to get it.”
The Mayor also claimed people are being noticed property before bulldozing any establishment.
Md. Jahangir Alam also mentioned that many private establishments, including shops, houses and business places, are being built illegally on government lands. “We have to knock them down for ongoing road development works. Owners of these establishments cannot claim compensation,” he added.
He further said that the road expansion work is going on in 57 wards simultaneously dividing in eight zones. “The roads are being built narrowly because it was under the municipality. We are now widening the roads from 15 feet to 30 feet and 30 feet to 60 feet and in some areas to 80 feet considering needs of the city.”
