Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said, he will give attention to bring back discipline on roads and in transport sector.
“Everything has to be accomplished in the beginning like ‘killing the cat’ on the very first night of marriage,” he said while talking to reporters in his Secretariat Office on Thursday morning.
He said, “No project will yield good results, regardless of number if the road and the transport sector are kept chaotic. If there is no discipline, there will be no benefit from taking mega projects. So, discipline must be restored.”
The minister said that he sat with the officials of the ministry and gave directives to all concerned. “It is the directive of the Prime Minister.”Responding to a question how will he restore discipline?, Qauder said he has his own plan and techniques to bring discipline in transport sector and there are some general ideas which are known to all.
Small vehicles create chaos on highways and motorcycles have become a new threat, he said adding that motorcycles ply roads recklessly outside the capital, he said.
“These problems need to be fixed. But the work is not so easy. If we all work together,
it would be possible to resolve the problems,” said Quader.
The minister said, it is now his challenge to finish the ongoing projects, he said adding that work on two important road projects — Dhaka-Sylhet four-lane and Chattogram-Cox’s four-lane — will begin soon.
The construction work on Dhaka-Sylhet four-lane will start by June and it will take more time to start that on Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar four-lane project. Besides, the construction work on Gazipur-Elenga four-lane will be finished by June, Quader added.
Responding to a question about the appointment of personal secretaries to cabinet members as per the choice of the Prime Minister, he said, “I think this is good as Prime Minister selected them after knowing about them.”
