Campus Report :
Speakers at a programme suggested including disaster preparedness issue in School Level Improvement Plan (SLIP) to help primary school students face disasters such as fire, building collapse and water-logging effectively.
The matter of school disaster management was mentioned in SLIP, a school-based development plan taken up by the government for ensuring quality primary education, but the matter of training on how to face the disasters remained neglected in it, they said.
They made the observation while addressing the programme titled ‘School-based development plan sharing workshop’ at YWCA Training Centre at Mohammadpur in the capital on Wednesday.
They said, due to lack of knowledge on disaster preparedness, primary school teachers could not train their students for facing the disasters, which put the students at risk at their schools.
Stressing on the need for ensuring quality education by including disaster risk reduction issue in the SLIP, they said if the issue of disaster preparedness is included in the SLIP, the overall quality of primary education would be improved.
Under the project ‘Strengthening Urban Resilience (SUR), Mohammadpur thana education office, supported by Primary Education Department and European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO), organized the programme. Development organization, CPD, acted as the associate partner of the programme.
Dhaka District Primary Education Officer Shaheen Ara Begum, Mohammadur Thana Education Officer Khaleda Begum, Mohammadpur Thana Assistant Education Officer Shaheena Akhter attended the workshop, which was moderated by Mohammad Fazlul Haque, Coordinator of SUR project.
Teachers from 23 primary schools and members of primary school management committee in Mohammadpur took part in the function.
