Former adviser to caretaker government Advocate Sultana Kamal said on Thursday that disappearance of any citizen in a country having democracy , cannot be accepted.
Disappearance cannot be the norms in any democratic country, she added.
Sultana Kamal who is also Executive Director of Ain O Shalish Kendra (ASK) said this at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club.
Members of families of eight persons, mostly belonging to BNP politics who were picked up by persons introducing themselves as members of law enforcing agencies since December 4, 2013 , were present at the press conference. Those who were abducted are Sajedul Islam Suman, cousin of Sumon Jahidul Islam Tanvir, Abdul Kader Bhuiyan Masum of East Nakhalpara, Mazharul Islam Russel of West Nakhalpara, Asaduzzaman Rana of Mugdapara, Al Amin of Uttara Badda and AM Adnan Chowdhury and Kawser of Shahinbagh in the city.
Sultana Kamal urged the members of law enforcing agencies to find out all those who have been subjected to force disappearance and return them to their families immediately.
It is the responsibility of the members of law enforcing agencies to find out those who have been subjected to have disappeared irrespective of their political affiliations. If they fail to shoulder their responsibility, she said, they have to be accountable.
Responding to a question Shahdeen Malik said , ” If the members of law enforcing agency arrests anyone, they have to produce the arrested persons before the court within 24 hours of arrest as per law and the Constitution. He urged the members of law enforcing agencies to show due respect to law.
The family members of victims of disappearance said those who have been subjected to forced disappearance, were picked up by persons introducing themselves as members of law enforcing agencies in civil dress. Repeated communications with law enforcing agencies did not so far produce any positive result , alleged members of victims families.
Dr. Zafarullah Chowdhury, founder of Ganoshasthya Kendra was also present.
The members of victims’ families later held a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club with the demand for return of their near and dear ones among them.
