Speakers at a social ceremony said the physically challenged people are the integral part of the society and called upon the affluent people to stand beside them to ensure their rights.
The physically challenged people are the worst victims of the sweeping cold wave and they should be prioritized through providing humanitarian assistance like blankets and warm clothes to mitigate their sufferings from cold, they said.
The local people organised the ceremony for physically challenged people at Polashbari SMB Multilateral High School under Polashbari upazila in Gaibandha on Friday for inspiring them through sports competitions and distribution of blankets among them.
Thirty physically challenged people of the area took part in the daylong social ceremony, demonstrated physical display, participated in different sports competitions and received prizes and blankets in the afternoon.
Senior teacher of Polashbari SMB School and College Alhaj Abdus Sattar Mandal presided over the discussion meeting, blanket distribution and prize-giving ceremony arranged on the occasion.
Principal of the institution Mominul Islam Pradhan, Assistant Professor of Kurigram Government Women College Abdur Rahim, Instructor of Upazila Resource Centre Sohel Mian, Headmaster of Mohipur Bazaar Model High School Khairul Islam, addressed.
Teachers of Polashbari SMB School and College Nurunnabi Sarker and Sadekul Islam, teachers of Polashbari SM Pilot Model High School Polash Kabir and Shafiul Alam also spoke.
The speakers termed the people with disabilities as the integral part of the society and said that disabled people could do the same as the able persons if adequate opportunities were provided to them.
They said sustainable national uplift is not possible without turning the people with disabilities into able and worthy human resources through ensuring their honour, dignity, sociopolitical and human rights.
At the end, prizes and blankets were distributed among the participating physically challenged of the area.
