Disability, disaster management confce in May

The international conference on “Disability and Disaster Risk Management” for the second time will be held in May in the city.
Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya stated this at a press briefing held following a second task force meeting on Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Management at the ministry here on Tuesday. Maya, who chaired the meeting, said that the decision of holding the second international conference was taken under the leadership of Saima Hossain, Advisor of the National Task Force on Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Management.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to attend the conference as the chief guest. The conference will review the recommendations of the ‘Dhaka Declaration’-2015.
Currently the country’s total population with disability are 15,41,149 and of them 4,19,000 are living in the cyclone-prone 19 southern districts.
Maya said the meeting also decided to collect an updated database of the disabled population living in those cyclone-prone areas.
The districts are Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Feni, Noakhali, Lakhipur, Bhola, Barguna, Barisal, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira, Chandpur, Jhalakhati, Gopalganj, Faridpur, Madaripur and Sariatpur, he added.
“We are working for the betterment of the disabled people and our aim is to patronize them,” said Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Shah Kamal.
