The government is likely to issue directives over reopening the markets on 24 April, on the condition of abiding by the hygiene rules, says the Bangladesh Shop Owners Association.
Helal Uddin, the association’s president, told The Business Standard, “We have submitted an application to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina seeking permission to reopen the shops.”
Hopefully, directives will be issued in this regard on 24 April, he said citing government sources.
A strict lockdown has been enforced in the country since 14 April, with all the markets closed, mass gatherings banned, and unnecessary movement prohibited.
The shopkeepers staged demonstrations in Dhaka and Chattogram on the first lockdown days, demanding the reopening of their shops.
However, their demand went unheeded as the authorities extended the weeklong lockdown for one more week.
