UNB, Dhaka :
Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Friday ordered the authorities concerned to make all highways fit for vehicular movement by July 20 in order to ensure smooth journey of the homebound people during Eid.
He came up with the order at an inter-ministerial meeting at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh on planning measures to reduce hassles during journeys before and after Eid-ul-Fitr.
Admitting the poor condition of roads, Obaidul said, “Roads are becoming black holes. These need to be fixed and any failure in this regard won’t be tolerated.”
It was decided at the meeting that the movement of trucks, except those carrying garment products, fuel and perishable goods, on highways will remain suspended for five days from three days ahead of the Eid. It was also decided that no unauthorised vehicle like Nasiman and Kariman can ply the highways from now on. The communication boss hinted that all the engineers of the Roads and Highways Department may need to cancel their Eid vacation if required.
They have to stay on roads during the holiday to make those fit for transportation, he said. Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Railways Minister M Mazibul Hoque, State Minister of Local Government and Cooperatives Mashiur Rahman Ranga and officials of different ministries attended the meeting.
