Meghalaya is exploring the possibility of connecting Shillong with Sylhet in Bangladesh through bus and flight services to boost trade and commerce.
After his meeting with representatives of the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma said during the meeting it was understood that there already been an understanding in terms of works and business, but everyone agreed that connectivity is still missing.
‘We have invited different Chambers of commerce to also visit Shillong, and Sylhet being only three and half hours away from Shillong, there can be a huge economic opportunities,’ Conrad said.
He another suggestion that came up was the need to explore the possibility introducing bus and flight services in the medium and long term between Shillong and Sylhet.
He said the Meghalava government would consult with the Union ministry of external affairs on this issue while terming the outcome of the meeting as positive.
On Tuesday in Sylhet, the chief minister who was accompanied by transport minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, education minister Lahkmen Rymbui and agriculture minister Banteidor Lyngdoh.
The delegation that also comprises senior officials, entrepreneurs and tour operators held a meeting with representatives of the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
At the meeting, the Chief Minister said that there have been historical and cultural ties between Meghalaya and Bangladesh, but yet to figure out how to improve the ties.
‘There is a gap somewhere as well as areas which we have not been able to pay attention to. There are many areas which are low hanging fruits as we called it, but meetings like these could help us find solution,’ he said.
The chief minister said Meghalaya and the government of India have been very serious about the relations and future with Bangladesh.
