Diarrhoea situation in the country especially in the capital is not good, as over 1200 patients come to the hospitals everyday. But many patients return disappointed sources said.
Officials from different hospitals said that the outbreak of the waterborne disease began in the mid March and the situation is deteriorating constantly.
They said that several thousand patients are rushing to hospitals while many of them returned to home after failed of getting a seat in medical facilities.
The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (Icddr,b) Hospital sources said that about 50 patients are coming every hour for seeking a bed there.
“Our hospital officials are passing busy time as about 50 patients move in every hour and create huge pressure to get a bed,” AKM Tariful Islam Khan, Communication Manager of icddr,b told The New Nation on Saturday.
He said the hospital has installed several tents outside to render medical service required for the extra patients. Besides, people from its surrounding suburbs and several other districts also are infected. Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Health Services informed of their alertness to tackle current outbreak of diarrhea.
“Diarrhoea patients are increasing before the summer. So, the government is alert to control the spreading of the disease. It has provided necessary saline, medicines and other supports to hospitals,” Md. Nazmul Islam, Line Director of DGHS told it in a virtual health bulletin recently.
On the other hand, public health experts are blame for ignorance of hygienic rules a major cause of the sudden and serious outbreak of the diarrhoea.
When contacted, Professor Emeritus Dr. ABM Abdullah, personal physician of the Prime Minister, told The New Nation, “”If the people follow the safety measures like washing hands properly, the sudden outbreak of the diarrhoea may not be possible.”
Public health experts said doctors’ advice is a must. They said that drinking of polluted water was the major reason of diarrhoea outbreak. Human bodies require extra water during this hot summer.
Meanwhile, people in the capital used to drink different types of fruit juices, sugarcane juices and other drinks as they become thirsty in this hot weather.
Most of the drinks and juices are prepared with unsafe water, and people who drank such juices might be infected with the diarrhoea.
As per the officials of the icddr,b, the outbreak struck in the first week of March but increasing number of the patients started to come to the hospitals since the mid of the month.
As per the data of the icddr,b about 1200 diarrhoea patients were admitted every day since March16.
