Dialogue on legal water supply to slums held

Business Desk :The 2nd phase of legal water connection by Dhaka WASA to Mohakhali Sattala Slum has been completed recently. In this regard a dialogue with the slum dwellers has been arranged at a city hotel on Thursday. Charlie Hrachya Sargsyan, Chief of Water and Environmental Sanitation Section of Unicef was present as chief guest while Imrul Kayes, Director of Water Aid, Dr Dibalok Singh, Executive Director of Dushtha Shasthya Kendra (DSK), AKM Sirajul Islam, Executive Director of Bangladesh Association for Social Advancement (BASA) and Fatema Akter, Representative of NDBUS were present as special guests. Dhaka WASA Managing Director Engr Taqsem A Khan presided over the dialogue. With the assistance of Unicef the 2nd phase connection to Mohakhali Sattala slum has been completed. The prize money worth $11000 of `Water Leaders Award’ won by Dhaka WASA at the World Water Summit, 2013 was spent for providing 1st phase legal water connection to the aforesaid slum. Dhaka WASA has received the award for bringing city’s slums under legal water supply network. Speaking on the occasion, Charlie Sargsyan, the chief guest said, bringing lower income community under legal water connection is a flagship project of Unicef. He also thanked Dhaka WASA for taking such a dashing and ambitious project. Dhaka WASA Managing Director Engr Taqsem A Khan said, Dhaka WASA is moving forward to develop an environment-friendly, sustainable and pro-people water management system. To make it a success the lower income community (LIC) of Dhaka city must be brought under legal water supply network. That’s why the agency has been working hard to bring all the slums of Dhaka city under legal water connection by December, 2015, he added.
