A Bangladesh delegation is ready to leave for Myanmar to verify the nationality of the 208 migrants rescued from sea recently. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is waiting to receive the fresh and updated list of the migrants containing details information from the Myanmar authorities, a BGB official said. “We are waiting for the fresh and updated list of 200 migrants containing details information from the Myanmar government. We are expecting that we will get the list by today (Tuesday),” acting captain of 42 BGB Major Abu Russel Siddique told The New Nation on Monday.
He said the 11-member team, headed by Col Khaliquzzaman, Cox’s BGB sector commander, is now ready to leave for Myanmar after getting the fresh list.
Earlier on Friday in the first ever drive by Myanmar rescued some 208 migrants and the Bangladesh government to bring them back home as they are Bangladesh nationals. Myanmar had said they would be returned “soon”.
The Myanmar government on Sunday sent a list of 208 migrants containing only their districts’ names and requested the Bangladesh government to bringing them back to country.
The BGB on the same day sent another information note to the Myanmar government requesting it to send details information about the ‘208 Bangladesh nationals’, the BGB Director General said.
The BGB urged the Myanmar government to make detail about the migrants like their addresses of their villages, post offices, police stations and districts.
