The government is mulling Chinese assistance for various development projects costing about $ 14.154.736 billion.
An official at the economic relations division (ERD) told The New Nation on Sunday that a process is underway for receiving Chinese assistance for 18 projects while the loan application and the signed commercial contract on the Info-Sarker Phase III and Karnaphuli Tunnel projects, costing $ 150 million and $ 705.80 million respectively, have been sent to Chinese authorities for their consideration.
The officials also said the government has decided to scrap its earlier proposal for Chinese assistance to the Improvement of Dhaka (Katchpur)-Sylhet Road to four-lane highway project for a condition that limited the tendering process of Chinese contractors.
Negotiation is going on for other projects, including for Rajshahi Wasa Surface Water Treatment Plant ($ 500 million), Installation of Single Point Mooring with Double Pipeline ($ 500.466 million), System Loss Reduction by Replacing 5 million Electro Mechanical Energy Meter with Electronic Energy Meter ($ 165.98 million), Expansion and Strengthening of Power System Network under DPDC (2038.06 million).
Negotiation are also underway for Padma Bridge Rail Link, Phase 1 ($1658.57 million), Padma Bridge Rail Link, Phase 2, ($ 917.18 million), Power Grid Network Strengthening Project under PGCB ($1321.83 million), Construction of Dhaka Ashulia Elevated Expressway ($ 1393.98 million), Modernization of Telecommunication Network for Digital Connectivity ($ 200 million) and Establishment of Full-fledged Five TV stations of Bangladesh Television ($ 127.88 million) .
Besides, a recommendation letter has been sent to a Chinese company for the Construction of New Inland Container Depot (ICD) near Dhirasram Railway Station ($200 million).
Another official of the ERD said the government has also received 15 project proposals from various ministries and divisions to be implemented with possible Chinese assistance.
These probable projects include some big schemes like Expansion and Modernisation of Facilities at Mongla Port (worth $1940.57 million), 2×600 MW Coal Based Power Plant in Pekua upazila of Cox’s Bazar (worth $3342.73 million), Conversion of Meter Gauge Railway Track into Dual Gauge Railway Track from Akhaura to Sylhet (worth $1756.05 million) and Construction of Marine Drive Expressway and Coastal Protection Works from Sitakunda-Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar (worth $ 2,856.56 million).
