BNP leaders and activists have smeared ink over a Dhaka school signboard after it was renamed Puran Mughaltuli High School from Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman High School.
A group of supporters of the party’s Dhaka South unit climbed over the school gate in the capital’s Mughaltuli area and smeared ink on the
recently repainted signboard at around 12:15pm on Sunday.
Protesting the government move to rename the school formerly named after the BNP founder, the party supporters also formed a procession led by BNP Dhaka Metropolitan (South) unit President Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel.
Ishraque Hossain, son of former Dhaka city mayor late Sadeque Hossain Khoka and BNP-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), was also present during the demonstration, reports Bangla Tribune.
Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, while addressing party men, said: “Ziaur Rahman’s name cannot be erased from the hearts of the people just by changing the name of a school. The general people of the country will not accept such heinous acts. We will continue protesting such incidents.”
Echoing the same, Ishraque Hossain, said: “This school was established on March 25, 2008, under the name of Ziaur Rahman by late Sadeque Hossain Khoka, former mayor of undivided Dhaka city.”
On Saturday, BNP had strongly condemned and protested the renaming of the school, claiming it was an act of “political vengeance” by the current government, reports UNB.
In a statement released over the issue, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that the DSCC authorities have changed the name of the school to Puran Mughaltuli High School while “ignoring the demands of the local people” and their sentiment.
“When the decision to change the name of the school was taken, BNP and the local people immediately registered their protest against it. We urged the city corporation to refrain from such a vindictive measure, but it is regrettable that they didn’t pay heed to any of the demands of the people,” he alleged.
Fakhrul also claimed DSCC changed the name of the school as they are driven by the “politics of vengeance and distortion of history” of the present government.
“We strongly condemn and protest this move. The current fascist regime made many attempts to erase the name of Ziaur Rahman from people’s hearts for over the last 12 years, but failed and won’t be able to do that ever,” he said.
The BNP leader warned that those who try to remove Zia’s name will be thrown into the “dustbin of history” and they will be erased from the minds of people forever.
