Dhaka reaffirms commitment to effective, functional D-8

Bangladesh has reiterated its commitment to strengthen the Developing-8(D-8) Organisation for Economic Cooperation.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam conveyed Bangladesh’s position when Secretary General of the D-8 Ambassador Jaafar Ku Shaari met him at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.
The D-8 Secretary General briefed State Minister Alam about the upcoming 10th Summit to be held in Dhaka early next year, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Shahriar also emphasised how to better collaborate among the member states by leveraging experiences and skills of one member state for others on complementarity basis, especially in the field of energy, tourism and blue economy.
D-8, also known as Developing-8, is an organisation for development cooperation among the following countries — Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey. It was established in 1997 at the 1st Summit held in Istanbul. Bangladesh hosted the second D-8 Summit in 1999.
The D-8 Secretary General also briefed the State Minister about the various initiatives undertaken by the D8, particularly in the field of technology and innovation, universal health care services, in the newly established Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and establishing FIZs (D8 Free Industrial Zones).
