The erosion of Madhumati River has taken a serious turn once again at Shyaldha within Kalatala Union Parishad under Chitalmari Upazila in Bagerhat district recently.
As a result, the major portion of Dhaka-Pirojpur via-Tungipara and Chitalmari Highwa at Shyaldha area was engulfed by the mighty river Madhumati on Tuesday night.
As a result, plying of all kinds traffics on the highway was suspended, causing much inconvenience to thousands of people of the localities. On the other hand, due to the erosion of the river a good number of business enterprises, dwelling houses, educational institutions, mosques and other establishments are threatened.
On Friday when some newsmen visited the area found 3/4th of the highway at Shyaldha point were already eroded by the river and cracks appeared on the rest of 1/4the of the highway and it may be engulfed by the river at any moment. A good number of businessmen of Shaildhya bazar including local UP member Jahangir Alam and businessman Md. Alam Shaikh expressed their mental agitation over the concerned authorities and told, the erosion of the river Madhumati is a regular feature here for the last few years. But it is not at all a headache to the concerned higher authorities. They added, we repeatedly requested the concerned authorities to protect the erosion of the river by taking a durable step.
But no satisfactory step was taken so far in order to check the erosion from any quarters.
Business establishments of Boka Sardar, Jhilu Shaikh, Babul Shaikh, Ibrahim Shaikh, Rahman Shaikh, Sobhan Shaikh, Shahadat Shaikh, Shah Alam Shaikh, Momraj Shaikh, Jahangir Shaikh and some other businessmen of Shaidha bazar were eroded by the river Madhumati. On the other hand, Dhaka-Pirojpur via- Tungipara and Chitalmari local Highway was eroded at Shyaldha point at Tuesday night. As a result, passengers particularly the passengers of long routes were thrown into an utter distress.
Md. Alam Shaikh, a businessman of Shyaldha bazar disclosed to the newsmen, the local SSD High School, Nurali Madrasa, a cyclone center and an Alia Madrasa are threatened by the river. They may be collapsed at any time in the river. Miraj Shaikh, an employee of the local (bus) counter of Dola Paribahan told the newsmen, as the major portion of Dhaka-Pirojpur via-Tungipara and Chitalmari local Highway was eroded in the river Madhumoti at Shyaldha point they suspended their passenger coach service between Dhaka and Pirojpur.
Shikdar Matiar Rahman, local UP Chairman disclosed, the matter was brought to the notice of the higher authority for taking necessary steps immediately to check the erosion of the river Madhumati.
Abu Sayeed, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Chitalmari said, I visited the erosion affected area more than once and by this time authorities of the Water Development Board also visited the erosion affected area. The UNO added, taking of durable steps in order to check the erosion of the river Madhumati are now under process..
