Prof ABM. Mosharraf Husain, Bagerhat :
The erosion of the river Madhumati has taken a serious turn within Kalatala Union Parishad under Chitalmari Upazila in Bagerhat district recently.
At least 20 dwelling houses including 10 business establishments and crop lands of village Shyaldha were already devoured by the river by this time.
Shyaldha bazar, a number of dwelling houses and a portion of Dhaka-Pirojpur Highway are now threatened by the river Madhumati. It is apprehended that they may be eroded at any time. The local administration is trying its best to check the erosion after placing the gunny bags loaded with sands there. But the erosion cannot be checked.
Local people disclosed, due to the recent incessant and torrential rain accompanied with the onrush of the river water at the time of high tide aggravated the erosion. Jahangir Alam, Robiul, Rahman and some other inhabitants of the village said, the river normally becomes violent just with the advent of the rainy season. At that time the current of the river becomes very strong and consequently, adjacent lands with dwelling houses are engulfed by the river Madhumati. They added, during the last few years crop lands, cocoanut and betel-nut gardens and a good number of dwelling houses of the area were devoured by the river. By this time adjacent areas of about several kilometers in length (of the river) are on the verge of erosion. By this time 10 dwelling houses and 10 business establishments of village Shyaldha and Shyaldha bazar within Kalatala union were engulfed by the river Madhumati. About 10 villages of Chitalmari Upazila, adjacent to the river are also now threatened.
