Bangladesh is weighing information and cultural exchange opportunities with Iran in order to build a bridge between the people of the two Muslim nations, a source with the Information Ministry said here on Thursday.
The issue of exchanging news, information and cultural programmes was discussed afresh today when Iranian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abbas Vaezi called on Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu at the latter’s office here.
Inu said relations between Bangladesh and Iran could be dated back to over 1000 years and many of the Sufi saints had settled in this part of the world from then Persia. The Iran’s ‘Nowroj’ festival has a great similarity with Bangla New Year celebrations too.
“So, the exchange of information and cultural programmes in the context of globalization would benefit people from both sides,” Inu observed.
The Iranian envoy earlier proposed for airing Iranian radio and television channels run in English in Bangladesh, a proposal Inu replied positively, said a press release of Information Ministry.
They also discussed about possibilities of crafting a draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) on it.
Officials from the Ministry of Information and the Embassy of Iran were also present during Inu-Abbas meeting.
