UNB, Dhaka :
The Cabinet Purchase Committee on Wednesday approved six proposals, including one to appoint Chinese company ‘China Railway Group Ltd (CREC)’ as a turnkey contractor for $3.139 billion railway project from Dhaka to Jessore through the Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project (PMBP).
The amount is equivalent to Tk 27652.57 crore which has been the largest contract won by a Chinese company under a direct procurement method. This means the Chinese firm did not have to face any competition and was selected as unsolicited one. The PMBP’s main construction work was also obtained by another Chinese company-China Major Bridge Engineering Co Ltd-at a cost of Tk 12,133 crore for the 6.15-km bridge.
The China Railway Group will do a huge package of jobs, including building 171 km railway lines from Dhaka to Jessore and 43.22 km loop lines connecting different stations, said Maksudur Rahman, additional secretary of the Cabinet Division, who briefed reporters about the proceedings of the Cabinet purchase body.
Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury presided over the meeting attended by members of the Cabinet body.
The Cabinet body approved a proposal of the local government division for awarding a contract to Max-Rancon JV to build a 668 metres pres-stressed girder bridge over the Bara Baliati Andharmanik River in Patuakhali at a cost of Tk 168.78 crore. Industries Ministry’s proposal to import 50,000 metric tons of phosphoric acid for DAP fertiliser company received the nod of the committee.
