The Dhaka-Shillong-Guwahati bus service will begin on May 22 on an experimental basis to ease the movement of the people of the two neighbouring countries.
An agreement to this effect will be signed soon, said an official release signed by information officer Sheikh Walid Fayez of Road Transport and Bridges Division on Monday.
The process of Bangladesh’s connectivity with India, Bhutan and Nepal by road is progressing fast, it said.
Sources said Indian Prime Minister Narendra
Modi is likely to open the bus service that will connect the two countries via Shillong route, during his visit to Bangladesh. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, who is now in India on a three-day visit, had a meeting with his Indian counterpart Nitin Gadkari at the Parivahan Bhavan in New Delhi on Monday to discuss the matter.
The meeting also discussed the progress of various proposed bilateral agreements and projects.
India responded positively regarding Bangladesh’s interest in accumulating 500 trucks for BRTC, 300 double-decker buses, 100 articulated buses and necessary equipment under the 2nd loan agreement with India.
Matters relating to construction of a bridge on Feni River, opening bus service on Kolkata_Dhaka-Agartala route and upgrading Ashuganj-Akhaura road to four lane one with the assistance of India also came up in the meeting for discussion.
